World cup legacy of big events

World Cup
I enjoy watching football and have been following the World Cup this year. The host country in 2022 is Qatar. Some people disagree with the World Cup being hosted in Qatar because of human rights issues.
Newsround has reported that ‘women are heavily restricted in what they wear’ and there have been ‘concerns over the treatment of workers from abroad’.
Sadly, between 400 and 500 workers have died because they have been put in a dangerous position in their work when building the stadiums. Also, many workers haven’t been paid enough and they are feeling that they are treated unfairly and that they’re not cared for.
The players have not been allowed to wear rainbow colours in the stadium (these represent LGBTQ+ rights) but some people have as a sign of respect.
Thankfully, there has been progress with gender equality in this tournament. The good thing is that three female referees and assistants have taken part in the men's tournament, which is the first time in history.
Also, because of the protest in Iran over women’s rights and the death of Masha Amini, in the first match, the Iranian football team refused to sing the national anthem. This was to show respect.
My opinion is that the World Cup has brought people together. Many are enjoying it and women referees have reffed games, which is a historic moment! On the other hand, I think workers should get paid more because some have actually got seriously hurt and many have died. Conditions need to be safer.
