What ONE change?

Headline Hero Future Proof Cities

This week, we're thinking about where we live. So, a simple question to get you thinking...

What ONE change would you make to where you live and why?

For example: One change I would make is to reduce the amount of noise pollution by restricting cars and buses in the evening. It's a busy road and I think the noise can be very stressful to people so it would be good to give them a break.

The best answers will:

  • Be clear and concise: just say what and why
  • Be specific. Don't tell us exactly where you live, but describe why something is a problem for you.

    Well I live in Gaza!
One of the changes I would like to change is (education!)
I wish we had more parameters!
Because these days, many of our teachers have contracted the epidemic, so I want that when a sick teacher is absent, another teacher comes so that we can benefit from the time instead of waiting for the teacher for a long day!!

    Well I live in Gaza!

One of the changes I might make is (the curriculum!) by deleting some of the “unnecessary” lessons because we really have a lot of information to memorize, especially in mathematics, and this is really something wrong with the student!
Because there are things we are not old enough to understand..!

      independent_technology's comment 23 Feb 2022

Can any student argue that mathematics is too important to delete?

        Tiff @ Topical Talk's comment 23 Feb 2022

Well, maybe several people will not agree with me!
But I said to delete the (unnecessary!) lessons.
Because I have a sister in high school, and sometimes I see in her math book things similar to what is in my book, but in an extensive and detailed way!
These are the lessons we need to study!
But there are lessons that we only study in the eighth grade and after that we don't see them in math books, so they are unnecessary!
Well, I will not say that they delete it completely, but at least that they shorten it significantly!

Also, if you go to work as a statistician in the Arab world, among the most difficult curricula, you will see that the Palestine curriculum is in the first place in terms of difficulty, according to the Ministry of Education!!
And what I am studying is in the eighth grade. If I go to another country, I will find them studying this lesson at university or even high school!!
Therefore, in my opinion, only (5-10) people will object to my change!!

In my opinion, mathematics is a really important subject. We use it in our daily life, like when we pay for items from a shop or checking the speed limit on a road. Without the knowledge, for instance, you might end up paying more or less than the amount necessary or causing a crash. If we keep on learning the subject and revising it, it also keeps our brains sharp and alert, for it can require quick thinking. It is especially important if you wish to be a doctor or scientist. However, I understand that it can be very confusing and maybe boring.

Yes, I agree with you that mathematics helps in understanding news, for example weather news, before you wonder about the relationship between mathematics and weather. You have to know that they have a very strong relationship, which is summarized in: Using mathematics to estimate the weather for the next day or weeks. in measuring the temperature. Determining the amount and type of rain. Atmospheric pressure measurement. Estimation of wind strength and direction

I do not agree with you that mathematics is not important because mathematics is an important subject and has a positive impact on our lives. Mathematics makes a person’s view of his life more effective; Because mathematics requires studying all aspects of the arithmetic problem to solve it; Therefore, the practice of mathematics helps a person in his daily life to see things comprehensively, and the practice of mathematics and its applications requires the ability to realize interconnectedness and think logically about mathematical equations and various arithmetic operations, and these skills that a person develops when he practices mathematics enable him to understand the world around him logically. The sequence in arriving at mathematical solutions enables the person to express his ideas clearly, coherently, accurate, and logically, which is important in daily life because the human way of expressing his ideas leaves an important impression on others. I think that given the importance of mathematics, no lessons can be omitted from it.

I see that mathematics is a basic subject, and nothing can be deleted from it. Knowing that mathematics does not have a significant memorization, only if you memorize the law for the problem, this is how you will have solved half of the problem, even if the subject is increased, mathematics is based on basics. If you understand it, you can solve any Easily an issue.

I prefer that the place in which I live be full of trees, than the road be full of dirt and the trash, and that the sky is clear and clean, not full of smoke from factories and cars, and I prefer that my city contains technological tools, such as a vacuum cleaner that By cleaning the street automatically every specific time, for example, this will help a lot to get rid of pollution.

If I could change one thing in my area I would give funding to our local FoodBanks as they can be life or death for many in my area and though they do what they can, there is simply not enough funding to support those who are affected with the struggles and pains of a low income or high rent family. FoodBanks are seen as distant for many as they do not interact with them on a daily basis. Often, in a fit of guilt, people send all those things they do not want to the charity and then forget for months again. People who use FoodBanks need to eat well. This is not enough for people to survive on if they are of low-income. FoodBanks need this funding to be able to become part of the new futuristic world that is always on the move.

If I could make one change to my area , it would be making the bare necessities more affordable for those who live in a vulnerable state or those who are part of a low income family. In society today, many people are not given the same opportunities as others because of their economic state. Some people in my area, look after many people in their households and they make the bare minimum, just enough to survive. However, if the rate for food and living expenses were lowered by a small fragment of what large scale companies and land owners earn a year it would provide people with a chance to achieve a successful and pleasurable life.

A change I would make in my environment would be in the educational sector. Many students have lack of interest in school and there is high rate of truancy in my area and I think this has to do with how complex, bulky and uninteresting education is made to look. In my community I will make sure education is fun and also beneficial to students so as to keep their interest and discourage truancy there will be a balance between the theoretical and practical aspect of learning for a wholesome education.

        Harriet @ Topical Talk's comment 08 Mar 2022

Well, I will imagine myself as a teacher in the future and if I want education to be more enjoyable for students, I will follow these suggestions
Learning is more fun when you don't know what to expect. When was the last time you were at a surprise party? How did you feel when you were surprised or when you saw the expressions of your friends as they opened the door to surprise you? Education can also be interesting when you make it mysterious. The next time you go to your lesson try to give the students a new puzzle every day until the last lesson. This is a fun way to make your lesson fuzzy. You may find your students looking to discover what they are going to learn and think outside the box. The lesson plan doesn't have to be like old boring worksheets or explanations while students They take notes over and over again. Try to think outside the box and do something out of the ordinary. Invite a guest speaker, go on a field trip, or explain the lesson outdoors. When you try something new and different there is a good chance that your students will respond with pleasure rather than frustration.

The next time you come to your class, try collaborating with a teacher or taking your students on a virtual field trip; Teaching doesn't have to be boring to be effective, and your students will find more fun in learning when it is presented to them in a variety of different ways.

Well and also I can in the future be a teacher I will make teaching more enjoyable for students with my suggestions not to take education too strictly

Being an effective teacher is an important job, but it doesn't mean you take it rigorously.

Try and relax a little and admit that your students may have different interests or learning styles than you, and it's okay to laugh sometimes, and it's okay to have some fun, you may find your students benefit more when you are more relaxed
Also, since students love technology, we can use them in education through technology is a good way to keep the lesson fun, children love electronics and any opportunity you get them to have is a good thing, instead of standing in front of the students and explaining try to use the smart board, and instead of having the students do activities Collaborative learning with class students only, try connecting with other classes via videoconferencing for group work. Use technology as much as possible and you will see that the interest level of your class will rise very high.

One of the things I desire to change in my country is the infrastructure of roads ans streets. We literarly dive when there is heavy rain, the situation is misrable here, we suffer alot from the unservicable roads and unqualifeid structure of buildings and main roads, the municipality does its best to fix things but there are no enough facilities or money to repair. I would like to rebuild all these expired roads which cause accidents and many deaths. You can not imagine the scene of kids going hone from schools and fully wet, they are all abscents in the next days as being sick and caught flue! You may have watched the picture of our pupils on news and every winter the same suffer.

One change I would make for my town is to take more petrol or diesel cars of the road and more people to buy electric cars or walk or cycle more I chose this idea because either when i'm walking to school or just going on a walk to the park there is always somewhere a traffic jam at the traffic lights which is meaning there is loads of cars on the road that means they are polluting the air and most of the time I can't see or hear an electric car on the road.

If I can change something in my community, I think we should put a lot of restrictions on street vendors who use loudspeakers throughout the day, which causes noise and audio pollution and disturbs the comfort of people and the comfort of the elderly and the sick. If I could make a change in my city it would be to move the hospitals away from the schools, in fact there is a hospital next to my school and this is suspicious, a little bit because of the sound of the ambulances running every moment, the student loses his focus and makes him tense and anxious
Regarding the patient's condition and health and his/her thinking about what happened to him/her , and on the other hand, this reflects negatively on him
The health of patients due to the school microphone and the noise of students, and patients need rest and calm

Maybe also if I could make a change in my city it would be (building rainwater drainage systems)
When it rains in my city due to poor infrastructure and the absence of rainwater drainage stations, the level of rain water rises and reaches the middle of the body, and rain enters the homes of residents, and the streets leading to schools are flooded, so we cannot go to school or even leave the house
This negatively affects the educational movement, the city's economy and public life.
So it would be good to build wells and networks to collect rainwater.

If I could change anything in my city it would be the bad roads in my city. I would like this to be changed because just within a 9 kilometre radius, there are at least 5 road accidents in every 3 weeks. this has lead to the deaths of dozens of people that sometimes I even know. The roads are riddled with pot-holes and make transportation of people and properties difficult, slow and dangerous. I have unfortunately witnessed a ghastly accident as a result of bad roads and although there were no fatalities, it led to the destruction of many cars, road side stalls and most sadly the injuring of about 7 people which was quite traumatizing. If given the opportunity, I would channel funds into fixing bad roads within my city to save lives and prevent the acquiring of unnecessary cost from fixing damaged property.

Since we live in cities we have transportation (that is far from polluting the air) it's blessing some people who live in remote areas or mountains find it difficult to move snd take days to reach the desried place while people who live in cities can reach the same place in less than half time . We have schools that may not be available in some places such as camps in addition to shops we don't have to sew our clothes manually or grow and raise animals to get a living. People always try to find negatives but why not look at positives and we should know bad things hide something good inside it

    If there is anything I would like to change in my city, it is to change the wrong habits and traditions of the people, such as early marriage of girls. First: they deprive the girl from living her life and completing her education, and secondly: this is harmful to the problem of climate change. When a girl marries early, the chance of having children increases, which increases the population Which affects the problem of climate change, so if I had the opportunity to change it, I would ask the head of state to prevent early marriage and whoever violates the law will be punished.         Ways by which people can help reduce air pollution are;
To begin with, people must be educated on the effects of air pollution, and there must be enforcement of laws and regulations like a ban must be placed on the importation of fridges and air conditioners that chlorofluorocarbons as coolant. Offenders must be punished severely to discourage others from polluting the air.
In addition, the use of modern technology in industry, this would help reduce waste in the form of gases that are release into the atmosphere to cause pollution. Also vehicles owners must follow strict maintenance plan for their vehicles in order to reduce the volume of exhaust fume that get into the atmosphere.

Let me explain , if citizens had the chance to disagree with unfair laws , bad ways of living or even things related to environment (like Objection to the presence of industrial areas near residential areas) and it actually get changed , that'll help improving the country in many ways ; it'll help getting rid of pollution or make it less , which (in fact) effect the climate which in turn can make a big difference in the economy of the country. And also, if citizens felt heard and important, they'll feel more connected to the people they live with (even if the social levels are different) which will build a strong United community.

That some people lose their lives due to accidents and that would be unfortunate and upsetting for me

The change that I will change is the traffic every morning. When we go to school, we are about 10 minutes late for the bell ringing because there is no traffic regulation and there are no traffic lights in every street that requires the street cutter to stop instead of a driver!! For me, the opposite is true. The pedestrian is first to cross while the driver is standing. I hope that traffic movements and traffic lights will improve.
    Thank you so much.

For me, I want to change the environmental pollution because we have a lot of garbage on the ground, and this causes environmental pollution and has many negatives, for example: 1_ It causes pollution in the soil, so plants do not grow.
2- Acid rain also occurs due to atmospheric pollution.
    3- It also causes dehydration.

What the people should do: educate the people by guiding them to the harms of environmental pollution, hanging banners on preserving the environment, and avoiding littering on the lands.

And to unite by living in a beautiful clean environment and preserving it for the safety of our people.♥️

If I could change anything, it would be pollution. Since this problem has been solved, our life will be wonderful, free of diseases, and it will contain a clear sky, sea, food and water free of dirt. And the number of deaths due to it, which is estimated at 7 million people annually, will decrease. Among the ways to solve: 1- Reduce the use of plastic. 2- Factories use special filters to purify smoke.
And I hope this happens and we live a pure, fresh and healthy life 🙏🏻

The change that I see that we must work on in my environment is to eliminate pollution and we like to cooperate to reduce this pollution, such as: choosing energy-saving devices, maintaining vehicles on an ongoing basis, disposing of waste in the places designated for it, limiting activities that lead to environmental pollution and I hope To get rid of this problem as soon as possible

I want to make a good suggestion for the traffic. What do you think that cars are prevented from passing in the school streets and that students and teachers are taken by bus so that there will be no traffic congestion and students will be able to reach school early and that the congregation my lead to accidents for school students so in this way we can protect students from accidents

Every country has so much cars which will release so much carbon dioxide and gas and because it happens all over the world the more gas we release the more the chances of our world ending.

The negative influence of drug abuse and addict in our youths is quite overwhelming. This has led to lots of psychiatric patients roaming on the streets where I live, most of which was trigger by the illicit use of drugs like marijuana, cannabis etc. If given a chance to change one thing, I will create more facilities like rehabilitation centers for people with problems of addictions and employ professionals to attend to them. The facility will also be charged with organizing seminars and trainings to educate people on the proper use of drugs, starting the students in Nursery/Primary to those in higher institutions

Where I live, I would improve transport links, such as, building a train station or a tramline, and improving bus links. This is because, we hardly have any outside connections, and it is important for people who wave less money to get out and about to explore the local area.

A change I would make to our community is traffic because everyday when I go to school, we are in the back of a traffic jam every day for 20 minutes, so if it could be changed, the vehicles could go quicker which would be good as it also means less pollution.

One change I would make is to pass a law where men and women can't get married until taking a complete course about marriage and everything related to it. I reckon this idea will lead people, in my commuity, to take marriage seriously. It is not only about the couples' relationship in their private room but also about the children they will give birth to. They will be more aware about all the responsibilities of having children. This way, the rate of divorce will decrease and most of the children will be brought up with their parents. Therefore, they will be good citizens and serve their commuinties better.
Building community starts from home; parents and children relationship. We should take this thought as a way to go, shouldn't we?

The thing that I would like to change in my city is to change the way people think in my community because they look at women badly that they are just working at home and raising children, but they have to be equal between the sexes.

I live in Kumasi and one of the changes I would like to make is water supply in our city . The water supply in our city is very bad sometimes when you wake up in the morning getting ready for school the tap will not be flowing .One of our solutions is to store water in barrels and if you don't save for the main time you would have to rush to the well in the area ,if you don't get there early you will have to join a queue and in the queue you may get late for school.

I think we should reduce the amount of traffic because when I go to school by walk, I can see so many cars lined up to take their children to school and for the rush hour in the morning, which makes it very busy. Because of this, I sometimes get late for school since we have to be stopped so that the cars can pass. This sometimes makes me late for school.
