The Friday Vote

Hub Headings friday vote.png

The Russian government are spreading propaganda - information to influence the opinions of its people.

For example, it calls the war in Ukraine a "special operation to protect Russia...to free people from the bad Ukrainian government."

President Putin has described the Ukrainian government as "neo-Nazis" - which is untrue. President Zelensky of Ukraine is Jewish and comes from a family who were partly wiped out by the Nazi holocaust.

Some might say it is not good for Russian people to see this because they might believe it. Others think it could be good for Russian people to see this so they can realise that their government is spreading lies.

Is it better if people in Russia see this Russian propaganda, or don’t see it?

Vote in this week's poll and add your reasons in the comments.

I feel its better for them to know because its quite funny that President Putin will say that the Ukrainian President is a neo-Nazi when he is fully aware that he is from a Jewish background which was partly wiped out by Nazis. I feel like the Russian President is in a desperate situation and is desperately trying to get any public support at all cost including propagating false information. The Russian citizens should know this because if they find out the truth about the Russian governments agenda, they will most likely fully oppose the actions of the government which will be a huge blow to the morale of the government.

I think that it is better to see them, so they can know the news of the war that is happening now, and know what their government, country and president are doing, so they can differentiate between right and wrong, despite this would be against Russia, but they can help with protests and raise their voice in the world for the injustice that Russia is doing to Ukraine, and this It might work with President Putin and his government.

It may be a little difficult for a certain group of people. There are people who only look at the news of their country and do not know the news of Ukraine. They will not differentiate between the person who is mistaken in the war. As for other people who look at the news from both sides, it will be easy for them to differentiate between them and find out what is wrong.

        Olga @ KPMG's comment 14 Mar 2022

No, I don't think the Russian people can access information now because of the ban placed by the Russian government on some independent media companies such as TV Rain threatening to jail anyone who spreads news the government thinks is "fake".
What they can do to try and determine whether the news told to them is fake or not is for them to be more exposed and not only focus on Russian news alone they should also listen to international news and try to hear what the international community is saying about the issue. If the Russian people are willing to accept this change, I feel about 90% of them will be aware of the truth.

Well, according to public opinion surveys conducted by NGO Levada Center, "Putin's approval rating was 60% in July 2020. Putin's popularity rose from 31% in August 1999 to 80% in November 1999, never dropping below 65% during his first presidency". This shows that the majority of the Russian people will actually believe the propaganda if it is shown to them.

    I will tell my opinion
I think and feel that if the Russian people see this propaganda or not, they will skip it and will not care about it, because they will not know how true this propaganda is, is it really true or not.
And I believe that advertisements will not draw their attention because we are today in the age of technology, in which there are all means to know the news and what is happening all over the world, and in their country as well. The advertisements will not draw anyone’s attention because the news and the social networking site are transmitting news second by second from the beginning of the occurrence The incident is also reported from different angles at the same time. From this, people know the truth about all the things that happen in the world, as if they see the event before their eyes.

        Tom @ Topical Talk's comment 11 Mar 2022

In my opinion, people in other countries do not know the truth either. I think that the people of the country are more aware of what is happening in their country, but people outside Russia can learn about events and facts and pass them on to the Russians through social media.
But in fact from my opinion and my point of view that whoever wants to know the truth about anything, he will search for himself, meaning that if the Russian wants to know the real answer, he will search extensively for the information he wants, but if he does not want to search and also wants to know the truth, he will obey all What the president says and he will listen to him and follow what the president said whether it is true or false.

That is why I chose my answer.

I think that propaganda they should not see, because the truth should not be known in any case because the United States of America made them feel that they are under a bad government and so that they do not think that Ukraine is bad and that they need this war to protect them from the Ukrainians, and because Ukraine has secured the United States of America through its support for Ukraine. Or people can believe the fake information from their president or the head of your country, so if they start to think that this is fake information it is true fake information and they will think that Ukraine is bad as I mentioned before.

I think they should not see this propaganda for several reasons:
    1. For people to read something like this published by the government, they must believe it and this (except for people who are looking for the truth and want to know it) and the percentage of these does not exceed 10%, and the remaining 90% will believe this and begin to feel that the war is important to fight the Ukrainian people
    2. I think that the people are the great incubator for the army and the government. If the people read it and believe it (and this is contrary to what I said at the beginning), they will lose confidence in those who protect and defend them, and they will not be of any help to them, whether in good or evil.

In my opinion, Russians should not see the propaganda knowing that the government has the power to control what they see and hear. Of course when the government has control over the news, they only tell people what they want them to think and not what they should know. Most times, what the government hides is the truth and what they let out is usually lies.
On the other hand, Russians should see the propaganda presuming they know the truth. If Russians see the propaganda when they know the truth, it will just amplify the fact that the government is untruthful. It will be obvious the government is trying to justify its actions.

  • British Council.jpg constructive_moth | Rhemaville Christian Academy | Nigeria

My answer is no, the Russian people shouldn't see it. I say this because generally, it is not good to spread false information. As far as it is not true, I don't think it is not worth sharing. The danger of disinformation can be seen in what happened in the US Capitol in 2021 false news was spread about voter fraud and election rigging and a short time after that the Capitol was invaded by rioters, who wreaked havoc they entered the two Chambers and the offices of members of Congress. They littered the building with broken glass, banners, used cigarettes, furniture and walls were left covered in blood. Members of Congress and the country were terrorized and remained anxious and frightened. If this false propaganda is shown to the Russian citizen they might believe it and see more reason to continue the war instead of stopping it.

On the other hand yes, it would be good to show the Russian people this propaganda because calling the Ukrainian president "neo Nazis" is a big accusation and the Russian people would want to do their research to find out if this information is true or not and when they find out that the Ukrainian president is not "neo Nazis" and is Jewish, they will realise that the information spread by their president is false and they might try to call an end to the war.

Russian 2; "yes ain't it about the bad quality of their president, l think is a good idea from our president to help the people of Ukraine."
Russian1;"hmm you have express your understanding but this is not the reason behind the scene ,our President is very wicked because he is trying to pour dirty oil in their mind in order for them to accept him as their president but that is not good."
Russian 2;"how can you say such a thing about your own president ."
Russian 1;"no our President is trying to bring the Ukrainian by a selfish way and it must be said ."But in such a way l understand why he is doing that ,because two heads are better than one so he need a helping hand.
Russian 2;"l judged wrongly your clearance had made me understand all this things and now l relizied that our president is so wicked."

We can help people in Russia to overcome these advertisements and learn the correct ones, 1- Spreading correct advertisements in abundance so that they reach the population of Russia, 2- A lot of spreading the right things on social media. If we implement these things, we will succeed in spreading our sound idea among the people of Russia?? And do you have other ways to spread the right ideas and things among the residents of Russia??

I think that people should see propaganda because it is better for people to know because propaganda is a bad word. It is the means used by repressive regimes to glorify their leaders, motivate their subjects, and distort the image of their enemies. It also depends on lies, distortion, manipulation and misinformation.

However, it also works to alert people and warn them of the dangers of a disease, and contributes to educating children about the way to cross the road safely, and helps build a real concept among citizens about democracy.

People can be divided between supporters and opponents of that propaganda and political differences occur in public opinion related to that issue, so there appears the problem of division in public opinion, which has the strongest impact in destabilizing security and order in The state, I do not support the Russian people’s knowledge that propaganda is false, because that will affect Russia more than others, because it is the weakest of what it uses for propaganda and harms it more than it benefits it...

My answer is... It's better if they see it
I said this because they need to know the truth about Putin so they can stand up against him. You see, if there are so many people that understand what he is doing and they try to stop him, then, maybe what he is doing could be stopped or at least postphoned. Even if they do nothing about it, at keast they can still understand what he is doing. Perhaps they might even try to help Ukraine.

I said this because if they see it, they will believe that it is real and won't try to help Ukraine or attempt to free them. Also, when the president shares untrue information, it will start a chain of people following him and listening to him. When this happens, Ukraine will be in a horrible situation and nobody will be there to help the people there.

It is better that they do not see that, because the view of society has changed today, so people believe what they want and not what is true, but they must search and see the extent of the truth of the matter and see from both sides so that they can differentiate, not because the president is the one who spread propaganda, so his people must believe it

It is better not to see it for several reasons:
    1. Most of the people will believe this propaganda, especially since the president is the one who said this propaganda. For the people, anything the president says is obligatory for them to believe.
Only a few people who are interested in knowing the truth and hearing both sides will look at Ukraine with hatred
    2. If the people find out the truth of the matter, there is no trust

I think the consequences will be that everybody will go against Ukraine and the men in Russia will go and fight in the war which will make Putin more stronger and Ukraine more weaker and vulnerable.
This will probably mean that Russia will win the war and maybe start attacking other countries. Due to this, it could make a World war 3.

I would suggest another option which is launching an awareness compaign for the whole world to show them the evil of the Russian policy and uncover Russia's forged mask. I woukd rather go with spitting the light on the brutality of this enemy. All news stations and journal have to stand side by side to represent the barbaric crimes commited by Russian soldiers in Ukrain. The world should realise the facts the may many children are kilked, cities bombed and people are becoming refugees. The world should know that all the countries will pay the fees of this war. They should stand with justice, goodness and peace represented by the Ukrainian people.

My answer is.... I think the Russian people should listen to Ukrainian and Russian propaganda
Because if they look from one point of view, they will find that the Russian propaganda is true, but if they look from both sides, they will be able to differentiate between right and wrong.
In our time, the people believe what the government says, thinking that the government is a friend of the people, but I think that some governments have political and democratic goals. Do you agree with me on that?????

I think they should see this propaganda for these reasons
    1. For people to read something like this published by the government, they must believe it and this (except for people who are looking for the truth and want to know it) and the percentage of these does not exceed 10%, and the remaining 90% will believe this and begin to feel that the war is important to fight the people of Ukraine the people have to be aware of what is happening so that they can take a stand for what they think is right or wrong so that their decision(if influenced) is made rightly.
    2. I think that the people are the great host for the army and the government. If the people read it and believe it they will lose confidence in those who protect and defend them, and they will not be of any help to them, whether in good or bad as well as they are aware of what is actually happening.

My answer is... it is better if they don't see it.
I say this because if the people are constantly exposed to this propaganda, they might start believing it. I know someone who was steered into believing something through a series of nagging and persuasions. Constant persuasion has proved to be a powerful social influence. It is just like when we see commercials on TV over and over again convincing us to buy a particular product over time, we can start to believe that we need that product and before we know it we find ourselves buying that product. It also applies to political statements and even scientific publications. Once we keep on hearing them over and over again we tend to believe it.

From my point of view, I feel like the Russians should not see it because if the Russian citizens should see this propaganda and find out the truth about it they will lose faith in their government and this is not good because the people are the driving force of the government and if they lose faith in their government they won't help their government in any way(be it good or evil).

    My opinion /
I think that in our time, especially because of technology and science (the eye) is the one who rules.... Why do the Russians care about their president's propaganda when they do not trust him? On the other hand, why do they care about advertisements when there is television and news that transmit sound and image from the heart of the event, i.e. from the truth itself?! ...
I want to ask you: If someone told you that Russia is the oppressed, that it wants to protect itself and so on.... At the same time, you see on the live broadcast (explosives) destroying Ukrainian installations، tell me! Who will you believe?
I never object to the idea that the Russians see media propaganda to their boss, on the contrary, this will help them to know the truth about their government, especially if they compare the speeches of the Russian president and the speeches of the Ukrainian president.

As long as the Russians  are staying at their country, they absolutely will see this propaganda.
It's not that easy for Russian people to choose if it's better to see propaganda  or not.
Because  people receive propaganda messages in recognition because the human being tends to believe what is said at least at first sight, as well as the lack of knowledge of the "analytical logic" of the message among the public, especially with time constraints.
And you can add "cognitive sloth" and hand the brain to an elite that thinks on behalf of these zombies, so this elite is an invisible government that leads the people where they want to be.
They're pulling wires that control the public mind.
And whether you're convinced or not, you're in the propaganda world.  People should either be vigilant, inquisitive or subject to propaganda.

I think the Russians should hear this propaganda because they might want to consider supporting Ukraine when they eventually discover some of the facts. After realizing that some other propaganda that have been spread by President Putin is either inaccurate or false, the people of Russia might start to lose confidence in the things that President Putin tells them about the war. Some Russians might even go as far as researching on it and after realizing that the information is actually false, they will switch sides and support Ukraine.

I said this because I believe the people of Russia should hear this propaganda my reason is, when people watch news, and they see what is going on between Russia and Ukraine they tend to get easily misled with whatever information they get. The Russian government said they are attacking Ukraine to protect Russia which turned out not to be true because all Ukraine is doing is trying to defend themselves from the Russian attacks. Upon consideration of this, some Russian people will start having doubts as to what their government is saying and it is all a matter of time before more and more of them realise most of the information, including the one where the President of Russia said the government of Ukraine are “Neo Nazis” have all been either untrue or inaccurate and this would influence the general mindset of the Russians about the war against the Ukrainian government.

I said this because I think the people of Russia should see this because their president has been lying to them first he tried to make them believe that the Ukrainian government is a bad government, now he wants Russians to see Ukrainian Government as a neo-Nazi hence tarnishing the reputation of the Ukrainian president. Now this propaganda by the Russians could change the people’s perspective on the Ruso-ukraine conflict. This propaganda is classified as one tactic that involves pushing of large amounts of misleading information over multiple media channels (such as social media, internet and news broadcasting channels). It is a strategy to silence and mislead the public by the Russian government without regard for truth, steadiness, stability or reliability. In my opinion, Russia has taken advantage of media and technology in an unbelievable, unimaginable and disturbing manner during this so called special operation of which it lacks commitment to consistency and very contradictory. This propaganda is so overwhelming and confusing.

I said this because I think the people of Russia should hear this propaganda. Research has proven that people should not rely on one media channel. To get an accurate news on current happenings people should have a variety of source of information, listen to debates/arguments from different sources, listen and receive messages from different media outlets that will convince them but points to the same conclusion. Lastly, people should assume and bear in mind with great consideration that all information gotten from different sources are based on different points of views of the writers. Hence variety of sources where information is gotten matters a lot. It should also be noted that endorsement by a large number of users boosts the trust, confidence level, and reliability of whoever is reading such article. Russians should listen to the views of other people especially because the propaganda is or was released by their president so he could say anything to go in his favor.

I said this because In my opinion the Russian propaganda is continuous, repetitive and very responsive to events hence it could change the opinions of other people so people should not listen or see these propagandas by the Putin’s government. This will further create more chaos than is already in play. A repeated statement increases its acceptability as being true, it has been a thing of believe that people rate statements to be more truthful, believable and valid when they keep coming across the same statements over a couple of times than believe new ones. Familiarity has made people believe or accept information brought by repetitions to be correct. Due to these repetitions, the Russian audiences could get more familiar and find the sources trustworthy.
