Hello, my name is reflective_artic_fox and I will be discussing whether or not any president has campaigned unopposed. Not having a contestant in this case could be good and bad, depending on certain views. These views could differ and change but they are mostly opinionated.
If it were for the actual president's view, it would be positive, as they get the top job without having to work too hard. However, this could also be negative if they had had second thoughts about it, and actually regret becoming one. This could be if they were feeling guilty about the weight of responsibility upon them.
However, in the case of the public, they could feel slightly annoyed and frustrated, as they might have not got a say. They could feel surprised, as no one would be brave enough to stand up, or just wouldn't be able to. Another emotion could be happiness, as they might actually agree with the president and how he plans America's future.
There has been one quite famous president without any rivals; president George Washington himself, the first President of America. There has also been one President without any 'major' opposition, although not so well-known, president James Monroe in the second term of the 1820 election. George Washington was unopposed in both of his elections, and Monroe not been challenged for both two terms.
I think that this can be fair and unfair, depending on the candidates attitude. If they were a good president, and had very generous ideas, then it would not matter as much. But it would still affect the election as they would have technically commited a sort of sabotage, if they claimed all the power without hearing other people- or others interested in becoming President- out, then that could be unfair as there could be different ideas and plans which raise the economy. However, if you were a not so responsible and immature president, then it would definitely matter, particularly if you had a lot of power. A reason could be that no one was brave enough to stand up, or simply that they are too young or do not fit the other trend in order to be president. The reason that it would matter is that they would not be suitable, and the people probably would not agree with most of his/her ideas. They would also have a lot more power, which in the wrong hands could lead to disastrous outcomes.
The benefits of being unopposed are that you would be president without having to do much work such as funding campaigns, e.t.c. You would also have quite the upper hand, if you would know what it is like for the actual people. However, there are also downsides. You may not have the full support, as you would be a 'new recruit' and not many people will actually know what you are like. You could also not be the preferred choice, despite being the actual nominee for it. Finally, you could be listened to but not taken into account.
It is aout impossible to have an election with no one in it. For one thing, the previous president will nearly always have to attend it, unless he or she has reached the limit as their time in the White House. For another, the Vice-President also has too in most cases. Lastly, any other contestant is available to enter or quit the race, as long as they succeed the many rules regarding who you are. In the 2020 election race, Elizabeth Warren quit, claiming that people hoping for another female president 'will have to wait four more years'.
I think that this should not be the case, as being unopposed is like not having the full whole. You would still be missing key parts, as whether you and others actually want to step up and you should take other's thougths into consideration as well. Many people could not actually want you to be their leader, or migth even not want anyone to be their leader! And what if others, who might not fit the trends, but would actually be a really good president, don't support you? Then others could not support you either, as thy might support the other worthy opponenets! Finally, if you were really immature, and didn't even deserve the job, but were forced to do so because you might have had some worse- or none-opponents, then you should not get the job, in my opinion. There are also some reasons against this view, however, I think that most of these are not as important as opposing.
Thank you for readin my post, and I hope to see your opinions on it in due course!
