Why do the public vote for electors; why don't they vote directly for the president?

In the electoral college the people of America vote for electers who then vote for the president. There are 538 electors in the electoral college and to win the role as president a candident needs 270 votes. Each state has a different amount votes depending on the population of that state. Every 10 years the amount votes each state has changes. I think that the people should just vote deirectly for president i don't think they should vote for electers who then vote for president because the electers can change their mind.
