Should we intervene or not?

Dear James Cleverly,

I am a year 6 student at Lyons Hall Primary School and I am very concerned about the Hong Kong crisis. Even though I am only 10 I should have a say about the issues in the world that I am going to grow up into. After a lot of research and making sure the facts are true I am here to discuss the Hong Kong crisis and if we should or shouldn’t intervene.

Why We Shouldn’t Intervene:

We shouldn’t intervene because England and China have a really significant trading business together and we rely on China for a lot of things like:

And many more. Did you know that in 2016 Britain imported £42.6 Billion worth of goods from China. China also has a substantial military so if it does come to war then it would have a big negative impact on our country and there would be a higher chance of us loosing than China. We will also loose a lot of valuable materials we need. Also for a while our government has been unsure about getting involved with another countries business when countries don’t get involved in ours.

Why We Should Intervene:

We should intervene because we were the ones who gave Hong Kong back to China in the first place after ruling for 150 years. Plus, we co-signed the Sino-British joint declaration stating that Hong Kong would stay the same with democracy, freedom and human rights until 2047. But China has broken the declaration and the 1 country 2 system rule. Which England and China signed in 1997. China is now meddling with Hong Kong’s elections and is tightening their grip on Hong Kong. Hong Kong should also be allowed to pick their own leader because if China can, then they can pick someone who is their puppet and make the puppet make Hong Kong obey to China. Now that China has tried to introduce a new rule to Hong Kong where criminals in Hong Kong can be sent to China to be put on trial which in China there is a 99.9% chance that they would be found guilty. Did you know that so many Hong Kongers disagree with this rule because then China can target key people who try to stand up to them and join in with the protests so the rule has been put on hold.

My Opinion

To be honest I see both sides of this issue but if I had to choose I would say that England should intervene and soon before China does take over Hong Kong and it will be too late.

Your Sincerely,
