Could there ever be too much news? (First Pandemic to Infodemic Piece)

We've all been listening to news all over lockdown as it helps us to understand what is happening not just in the UK, but in the world. TV and social media are in fact the most popular devices that you can use to find out what is happening all around us. But there could be some times where things get a bit overloaded and could cause an infodemic. Here's what some people have to say about it:
👨I prefer to keep on following the news whether it may cause an infodemic or not.
🧑What's the point of not following the news if you don't know what's going to happen?
👦I do want to know about everything around the world, but I would like a short summary just so it's easier to understand.
What is an infodemic?
An infodemic (not pandemic) is when people are given news of the same story over and over again. This could a load of facts, fake news, misinformation, updates and opinions. Getting all of this in to one whole headline could make it complicated for most citizens to pick out the real truth and can make the news story much more confusing.
My Opinion
I think a short summary would be much more simple than an overload of news because it makes it easier for people to pick out the real evidence and it makes the news story less complicated.
Any questions? I'll be free to answer them! If there's anything more you would like to tell me, feel free to type it in the comments section!

yeh i agree with you that would be better
25 Feb 2021
they are repeating the same thing over and over and i do not think it is all true.
I also agree with that as well. Sometimes things like this can happen but with a simple summary, it would be easier as I just said.

It's a tricky one, isn't it? We don't want to miss out on anything that might be important, but we have to find ways of prioritising the information coming our way and then find ways to work out if the information is real or misleading - or even completely fake. You have suggested that short summaries might help with information-overload, but do you have any ideas about how to work out if information is real?
25 Feb 2021
You could check on a news website to check if the information is real. Also, I agree about that we have to find ways of prioritising information that is coming our way.
Yes, good idea about checking on the relevant websites rather than just accepting what you might see on a news feed or on social media. Well done for starting such an interesting line of thought on this topic. You are really making people think about things in an objective way.

I think there can be to much news as it can bombard people with things that they might not want to know or that can scar them this is why I think it can be bad .
Some of it could be much more than too much!

I agree that there should not be too much news because people have to stop doing their job and tune into the news 🗞 and then the people doing their work will have to work later. Also, people will get frustrated always tuning into the news so there should be like 1 peace of news everyday in the morning so that people dont have to work late.

Sometimes you can have too much not so important news or some fake news and also you need to know every thing going on incase you go to that place and there is some important news you need to know
26 Feb 2021
I disagree because with many sources of information, you are able to decide which piece of news you choose to believe.
But we wouldn't want an overload, would we?
26 Feb 2021
It was ok

I think very highly of your opinion as with this as you said there wouldn't be as much fake news as their is today.

the news gives us important information about what is happening around the world.
04 Mar 2021
i think that there can be too much news because it is repeating its self

There shouldn’t be too much news because then people wouldn’t take notice of important news as there would be so many topics covered over the same thing that you wouldn’t know what to believe, some might be true, some might be fake, e.g. lockdown, coronavirus schools and future plans. If every news story was just a summary about the topic instead of lots of paragraphs going over similar things, then it will make it easier to pick out the most important and relevant stories and will also make it less complicated. If this happened, then it would be alright if there was lots of news because you’d be able to know which ones are fake or not.

If there were to be fake news what would be your opinion on it? And would that effect your opinion on infodemic and can it cause people too panic or start a massive group of people to stand and stay there with signs to fight against something that doesn’t exist ? Do you have any ideas on how to stop infodemic ?
How could we stop an infodemic? What a great question!
We could stop an infodemic by: being critical when you look at social media, don’t leave false information in your online networks, you can politely ask the person who shared it to remove it, report the false information to the platform administrators, when in doubt, take the time to verify the shared information and make more noise than people who share false information.
All of that would be good too.
To stop an infodemic, you could try checking on a news application (or app) or you might try and see if the public think if the news are really true or false. Also, try checking on a news website and look for a headline based on the news story. We might not know if it could be positive or negative because the public would have to check through it to see whether it is really good or bad.
If there were to be fake news, I think that ,yes, it may cause an overload, but with a jam-packed of news, you would be able to read what is the most important headlines and not the ones that aren't really that relative.
Good advice, lucky_pineapple!
Thank you so much for giving me my first star by the way!
well done!

I believe a terrible infodemic is when many news reports, which are negative, come in all at the same time. Imagine there is a big discussion about the Harry and Meghan interview on BBC news but then comes Sarah Everrad's disappearance and Pier's Morgan's resigning and lots of people have a lot of trauma going through their minds. So people should watch positive news instead of negative news.

We can stop an infodemic if we stop renouncing bad news and stop doing bad things as it could ruin their mental health
