The role of technology in helping refugees

Refugees and Responsibility – Featured Image 3

Hello everyone!

How can technology help refugees? I have an idea:

We could use video conferencing technology to provide free lessons in the areas of language and personal skills for children affected by armed conflict, and it also provide information about the world to young people in refugee camps.

It could have volunteer teachers, including university students and retired teachers and other local volunteers, with the aim of providing education to refugee students, and in this platform is a database to connect teachers and students based on their needs, skills and geographical proximity.

the health

Technological progress has made health care easier than ever before, by using technology to keep and archive health records for sick refugees, as most of them did not have health records, but over a year and a half a new health project was able to create electronic records for more than 10 thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, including data on the refugees' health and medical history, which could later help them obtain quality medical services.

My question *is there any areas in which technology is used to help refugees?*

I went to reliable sources on the internet and found that refugees really need technology to sort out their problems. When refugees live in their houses, they only carry some food, water, and their phones. I learned from the site that all a refugee needs are a reliable network and a smartphone. Because of technology people can share messages and track locations. I think that the refugees can use the GPS system to make sure that they are on the right path even on the seas. Refugees can get even get help from the UNHCR and governments online so that they are guaranteed reliable help. This issue is important because it is the easiest way for a refugee to get help yet 50% of the refugees don't have internet-capable phones while 29% don't own a phone at all. I think when we take about refugees with no phones, we are talking about children refugees who have been sent alone. For example, Mo Farah, the Somalian athlete, was sent with two of his brothers to the UK if I am not wrong.

Great ideas appreciative_pear, but as we know learning via technology and doing such activities is a very expensive way of learning as it needs a lot of devices ( phones, laptops,...) And also internet access. These refugees who aren't able to buy food, how can they be able to buy such devices and connect to internet? So my question for you is: How do you think such problem can be solved, and who is responsible for financing such big project?

Yes for sure there are areas in which technology is used to help refugees. First, the "Iam a Syrian in Lebanon" is a Facebook page which was lauched on 2014, gained 30,000 members seeking tips in enrolling in school. Second, in Dadaab refugee camp in Kenya, a refugee teacher named Amina, sends lessons to her students on a station called Radia Gargaar, due to the schools' shut down, where 100,000 refugee benefited from this. In addition, to give women refugees more skills and empower them, ReDI a Berlin based non_profit school, offers free coding and digital courses for them. Finally, the UNHCR provides technological devices (laptops) special for blind refugees in Burundian studying with DAFI scholarship.

For sure there are many areas in which technology is helping refugees. For example, In Lebanon we have 1.5 million Syrian refugees in addition to 14815 refugees of other nationalities. Humanitarian workers are helping more than one million of Syrian refugees in Lebanon. To convince you with my point this site can explain more the importance of technology in finding solutions for this issue in Lebanon: How new technology is shaping the refugee response in Lebanon - Lebanon | ReliefWeb

Internet access and connectivity is very important for refugees, as it helps them to overcome feelings of isolation, get peer support, stay in touch with family, and access learning opportunities elsewhere in the world, among other things. From online courses, a wide range of online learning opportunities designed specifically for refugees have emerged

There is no doubt about the effective role technology plays in spreading awareness about refugees, publishing information and suggesting solutions. For instance, "refugees" a tiktok channel which publish videos about tips to help refugees, and also publish the latest news and updates about refugees which Ukrainian Refugees were the last in it and also including Yemenis, Syrians, Palestinians and a lot more.

    Antura and letters
This game helps Syrian children learn to read in Arabic, and aims to raise their spirits and enhance their mental health. It is an application that works on old smartphones and does not require an internet connection.

    Progress
It offers a distinct and different service. With the gameplay and the ability to work directly on the app through the mobile phone, it makes the experience of adding metadata associated with a different location or data fun for young groups.

    Doctor X
It is an electronic medical record for every refugee that is examined by a doctor whenever he treats a refugee. The organizers of this project are working to translate all medical records into five languages to make it easier for doctors to inform doctors of the health status of any refugee in the event of his transfer from one country to another. Due to cramped and hard conditions, refugee camps are particularly prone to the spread of infectious diseases. "The doctor will see you now" is a diagnostic platforms that have the ability to ensure pharmacy services, prescriptions and treatment regimes are all standardised within these areas are now beginning to appear. Furthermore, using technology to improve health services has already proven a success in the countries which have the highest per-capita refugee population in the world especially Lebanon
. In one of its camps, Syrian women have used technology for antenatal appointments, allowing them to communicate with doctors
    and receive health information online.

From what I learned about the refugees’ conditions and living conditions, I found that they really need technology, which may be an alternative that relieves them of their suffering, especially in terms of bringing the distances between them and members of their families closer. In a changing world, technology has become a basic requirement for everyone, and refugees are more in need of this technological revolution. There are many pages that were established to help refugees and they were really fruitful pages. This technology is a tool for changing the life of the refugee. There is a link between this question and a question I have answered before on Topical Talk about the role of technology in achieving gender equality. Link of the post: https://talk.economistfoundation.org/projects/break-the-bias/the-discussion/the-role-of-technology-in-achieving-gender-equality/
The link is that both of these questions are asking about the same issue to show the effective role technology can play in different fields. Yes, technology is a recognizable tool which became a main part of our life and can be used positively in solving various problems and from them is helping refugees and achieving gender equality, especially the influential social platforms that bring huge impacts on peoples minds in changing their minds toward a certain issue

Yes of course! The biggest evidence is the role of technology in saving education and businesses during COVID-19 pandemic. We all viewed the effective role of technology during that pandemic where stuents moved from in-person education to online education for students to not lose this important part of their life which is education. Although students and teachers faced a lot of issues during online education but this doesn't negate the significant role and its success in this domain and all this of course is one of the merits and significance of technology.

I used to think that technology had no role in helping refugees, but I think now, after studying well on several sites, I understand that technology has a very big role.
I changed my mind because of technological advances and easier health care than ever before, through the use of technology to save health records and archiving of refugee patients, where he did not have most of them health records, but throughout the year and a half, managed a new health project to create electronic records for many refugees, including data on refugee health and medical progress, which can help them more than ever
