Border or Border-less? (What are some of the negatives and positives of the barrier?)
To begin with, this article will be about: ‘’What are the benefits and disadvantages of building the American border?’’ and ‘’Should Trump go through with his decision?’’ This topic is quite debateable and there will be, both, opinion and fact. This article will cover:
-Positives of the wall
-Negatives of the wall.
Firstly, some of these words will be mentioned within this page that you may not understand:
-Border/wall- A fence or wall separating something, so that there is seclusion on both sides. (In this case, Donald Trump would be separating himself and America from Mexico.)
-Positive reason- A good or enlightened term used for something which could benefit something else.
-Negative reason- A pessimistic term used for something which is not benefitting something else.
-Migration- Leaving one area to live in another.
-Populism- Some people may feel as if their requests have been ignored by important agencies.
-Consensus- A survey or vote which indicates what the public would like to happen.
What does Donald Trump want to achieve? Many sources state that the information is limited on what Trump would like to achieve (on building the wall), but some sites suggest that; Donald Trump would like to prevent immigrants from going into the country, freely. Many news reports state that, Trump is unsure of what he would like to achieve, only that the money he would get, would go to the wall. Sources, also, mentioned that too many people are crossing the southern border illegally and that Donald Trump may be trying to prohibit that from occurring.
Background information on the wall: The wall, in question, would be around two thousand miles long, proceeding through; New Mexico and Texas. Trump, the American president, had wanted to build this wall for a substantial amount of time but he needed agencies to accept his offer, and provide him with the money. Recently, Trump has been talking about the wall as the Congress may finally accept his offer. The border, overall, would cost around $5.7 billion, (According to some extracts, both, America and Mexico will have to pay.) I can infer that, perhaps Trump wanted to build a wall by examining other successes.
Leading on, there are many sources which state that building the wall, would be an excellent idea. To start with, many statistics show that having a border may be beneficial to the American citizens as it would be a barrier of protection from illegal activity. If the border had been built, some Americans may feel safer as they may feel enclosed and not available to the public. An example of an unlawful act could be, illegal immigration. Some people may try to migrate and not register as a citizen to avoid paying tax, working or helping the country at all. Illegal immigration costs a lot of money as (if someone is not paying tax) there is less money going to the government to help support education, medical facilities, etc. Lastly, a study from ‘ThoughtCo’’ suggested that ‘There would be less strain on the government.’ However, we must ask ourselves if, ‘’Everyone would feel safe?’’
In contrast, many people believe that the negative reasons outweigh the positives. Critics argue that, even if the wall was built, people would still find other ways to get in to America. (It would be close to impossible to keep Mexicans out of the country as they would find ways around it.) This relates to; if the wall failed to serve its purpose, then authorities may question, ‘Why did we fund this, if it was doomed to fail?’ Another reason as to why the wall would not benefit anyone would be; If Trump’s purpose was to stop Mexicans from getting into the country, he would perhaps get demonized for it as some Americans may not agree with his decision. This could relate to populism as if Trump is only doing what he would like, the Americans may feel ignored or disregarded and (perhaps) they may start to rebel. However, this could be prevented if Trump had given his people a consensus. He could then plan based on either the majority or certain individuals (he would be giving everyone a fair chance.) If he, also, shared his ideas with the public, he could improve his original idea to prevent failure.
To conclude; my opinion; I believe that Trump should listen to his audience but, on the other hand, he is responsible for making the decisions so I believe he is trying to protect his country, even if it may not be fair to everyone.
