CRIME: Murder Statistics in 2018

2018 had the highest rate of homicides in London for ten years. Two weeks before Christmas, London’s homicide rate reached 131 deaths, with 72 of those being knife crime and 13 being shootings. There has also been a murder involving a crossbow. The last recorded killing before the record of these statistics was a stabbing of an 18-year-old boy who was killed in south-east London. Five people were arrested on suspicion of the crime.

44 of the victims last year were ages 16 to 24. Ten were shot, 32 were stabbed and one was killed in an attack using a knife and a gun. 25 victims were younger than 19, 6 of whom were shot and 16 were stabbed. In response to all of the killings, which surpassed the total of 2017 in November, the Metropolitan Police Violent Crime Task Force was set up, and made over 1,300 arrests within its first half-year. Although February had more murders in London than in New York City, as of December 30th, NYC saw 287 homicides. However, it still remains the safest major city in the USA.

The woman who was killed in the crossbow attack was named Sana Muhammad on Monday 12th November in Ilford. She was shot in the stomach with a crossbow and taken to hospital, where doctors managed to deliver her baby through an emergency caesarean, who lived. The man who killed her was her ex-husband.

In early May, President Trump used the knife crimes of London to defend the use of guns at an NRA (National Rifle Association) press conference. He said, "They don't have guns. They have knives and instead there's blood all over the floors of this hospital. They say it's as bad as a military war zone hospital. Knives, knives, knives, knives.” However, in 2016, 4.96 people for every million died due to sharp force trauma in the USA, while 3.26 people for every million died due to the same thing in the UK.

    HI fabulous_pomegranate,

This post has been given a star as you've shown great curiosity in your research and added links!

This post contains a lot of information. Can you pick out some of this information and explain what it tells us and why that is important. For example, you're figures on NYC and London murder figures tell us that London is less dangerous than NYC. This might be interesting to think about because both cities are a similar size and often seen as two of the greatest cities in the world.

i think it is increasing because people have been suffering from home and the people they trust.

i think it is increasing because of the media as some people hack to hunt people down to kill them and some apps can't block it while some can
