Stop and Search is where police briefly search a person for weapons or prohibited items. Police do this as there are many people who bring items such as knives and other weapons to places also to keep the public safe from any dangerous people. It is used in an effective and fair manner to support public confidence. They aslo do this to confirm their suspicions about an individual without having to arrest them.

Also the benefits are its a valuable tool, especially with knife crime, and it can prevent crimes from happening. Police officers now use it less as people have gradually started to stop bringing weapons to places.

The risks of stop and search are that some people may be searched and have just got a prohibited item or weapon that the police think have been bought to harm people but they do not have any intension of hurting people. This can mean that person can become angry at the police and they might hurt somebody. They will also think it was unfair that they might have been targeted. It does not matter what gender, race and age you are the police will still search the person if they think it is suspcicious.

I think that the benefits of stop and search overcome the risks as it can be very important to help catch weapons offenders, and to stop overall violet crime. It can also warn people from carrying knives as, if they think that they are going to be searched then they may not carry weapons. If more people are stopped and searched for weapons, there is more chance of finding weapons on people which therefore cannot be used to hurt someone, reducing the rate of violent crime and therefore keeping more people safe. I think that even if someone if carrying a knife or other weapon without the intention to use it, they could still be arrested and the knife confiscated from them. This is because, even if they were not going to use the weapons, somebody could have found it on them and used it against the carrier of somebody else. Therefore, eve if harm is the reason for carrying the weapon, it could still be the result of it. Also, even though the people carrying the knives may not have had the intention o use the knife, the police has no proof of this and cannot take the risk of allowing them to continue with the knife in their possession. If they get angry that their weapon has been removed from them, then I think that this could be potentially dangerous, but not as dangerous as allowing them to keep the weapon which is more likely to hurt someone than if confiscated.
