Should guns be legal in the uk?

In America, guns are still legal and many people present arguments to campaign for their continued legalisation, however some people believe that this should be the case in the UK. In Britain, it is illegal to own a gun without a license, which only stands for 5 years, however some people think that guns should be legal in the Uk, and give some reasons for this opinion. However, a majority of the people in Britain believe that this would be a bad decision, who also present many good reasons why.

Those encouraging the legalisation of guns in the UK argue that guns are not just used for bad things. For example, many shooting and hunting clubs use guns to do what their club was created for, and have to go through a lot of hassle with applying for licenses, paperwork and other work needed to acquire a license. They argue that making guns legal would save both the government/police and the clubs a lot of time and money. They also campaign by saying that some people only feel safe if they have a way to protect themselves if attacked and a weapon to defend themselves with. They say that a gun would be the best weapon to defend themselves with if they felt threatened, but they are not able to buy one due to gun restrictions. The people campaigning for the legalisation of gun laws state that it would also have the government/police lots of time and money as those applying for guns have to go through lots of training, which would not have to happen if guns were legalised.

However, if we legalised guns, I think that the rate of violent crime, especially gun crime, would increase because it would be easier for people to access the guns to use as weapons, so there would be more crimes with them. This would be very bad as we already have a rising rate of violent cime, and many people's lives are being taken away from them, or people are getting injured. If it was easier to access guns then many more of these deaths and harmings would take place and it would ruin more and more people's lives, which is not a acceptable. It is not fair that people's lives would be ruined because a few pepole want to play a sport which is bad for animals and because they want to protect themselves by carrying a weapon. If you carry a weapon you are more likely to be harmed by that weapon or another than if you don't, so it is not a good reason to legalise guns as it would increase the rate of harm inflicted by them. As well as this, it is worth the time and money to train those using guns (such as police and military personnel), if it ensures the safety of many people.

Overall, I believe that guns should not be legalised in the UK as the pleasure of a few clubs and the money saved could never, in my opinion, make up for the loss of life and amount of harm that it could cause.

Guns were banned after the Dunblane school massacre in 1996 with the exception of Northern Ireland. Dunblane was the UK's first school shooting. People can only carry guns if they have a permit to do so; however, it should be concealed from the public. There are 574,946 shotgun certificates which cover 1.4 million shotguns in the U.K. There is no minimum age for applying for a shotgun certificate, but the law says that children should not be using weapons without supervision of an adult. So, I don't think that the government is going to make guns legal, although, the fact that there are 574,946 shotgun certificates in the U.K, and there are 66.02 million people (figures of 2017) they may be getting forced into doing so.

In 2014, 14.5% of people in Scotland were victims of crime. This is the lowest number of recorded crimes in the country in over 40 years. Recorded crime is at its lowest level since 1974. So the government may not want guns to be legal because they don't want these figures to rise.

Overall guns shouldn't be legal in the UK because we don't know who we can trust with them. However, guns would be useful for self defense.

Can you find out some things that Scotland have been doing to help lower the crime rate in the country?

In 2005, Strathclyde police set up a violence reduction unit (SVRU) in an effort to address a problem that had made Glasgow, in particular, infamous. The study concluded that Scotland was the most violent country in the developed world (I don't believe this though). Scottish people were almost three times as likely to be attacked, as Americans and, 30 times more likely than the Japanese. Between April 2006 and April 2011, 40 children and teenagers were killed in crimes involving a knife in Scotland; between 2011 and 2016, that figure fell to just eight! They have started to treat violent crime like a health issue (just like how Will Linden said). I've just realized that the SVRU is the same thing Will linden is a part of...

They said 'a key approach is to seek to reduce opportunities for crime.' This means that they would invest in more security cameras and alarm systems. Another one that they said is: increasing natural surveillance by removing obstacles to line of sight or improving street lighting. I think this one would work, owing to the fact that sometimes you can't see the culprit in the CCTV footage.

I think guns should also not be legal because sometimes its for protection but you would need to be careful so you don't end up in court being accused and I also think guns should not be legal because sometimes when troops go to war what do use without guns we all need spaces when we fight I know we have other weapons but guns are the most sophisticated and logical way to fight in war.
