REPRESENTATION AND DIVERSITY - WE ARE ALL EQUAL!
This post was written by a student. It has not been fact checked or edited.
The topic I have chosen is representation and diversity because I have seen how people from different cultures, races and disabilities have been treated cruelly just because they are different. It is also important so people from around the world feel included. Diversity means having a range of people with racial, ethenic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds and various lifestyles, experience and interests.
Unfortunately many people have been affected by unfairness. For example George Floyd was an African-American who was murdered by a police officer in Mineapollis, on the 25 of may 2020. This made me realise our world needs change.
Martin Luther King Jr once said, ‘I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed- we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal.’ I totally agree with him and I hope that one day everyone will realise all men and women are equal and that being different is a good thing because just imagine a world where everyone is the same... it would be quite boring. Our strength lies in our differences not in our similarities.
The Black Panther movie was a big hit not only because it was a good movie but because its cast was 90% African or African-American. Many marvel movies have started including female roles but the public say it is still not enough.
In Britain it has been said that women get 16% less earnings than men, but new research has found that girls get 20% less pocket money than boys. While girls can expect an average of £2.50 per week in pocket money, boys will get 50p more. All of which adds up to an extra £26 a year. Why do boys get more pocket money than girls?
Many people with disabilities get judged or criticised. A lot of people think that a person with disabilities isn't capable of doing extraordinary stuff, if that is the case then why is there a paralympics ? Many people with disabilities have achieved amazing things. Swimmer Trischa Zorn from the USA has won the most medals of any paralympic athlete, yet she was born with a genetic eye condition that left her blind. I think we should remember the quote that a disability is just a different ability.
I really think that we should start treating each other equally. We don’t want this world to be full of hatred just because we are different. Being different is what makes us, us as I said before strength lies in our differences not in our similarities . We need to change, our world needs to change.
