Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

International aid - Standpoint image 3

Based on my perspective, I think that a country's first responsibility is to its own citizens, however it should still provide international aid when possible. A government exists to protect the safety, well being, and basic needs of the people. If a nation cannot provide proper healthcare, quality education and economic stability for its population, they will continue to become weaker and less capable of helping other nations. Helping the own nation first is not selfishness, it ensures the countrys stability and national strength which are necessary before offering any meaningful assistance beyond its country. However, this does not mean a country should ignore international crises. When resources are available, nations should still contribute to international aid, since helping other countries also creates a long-term benefit for the country. It reduces the chance of conflicts, lowers refugee pressures and strengthens the international relationships building global stability. By prioritizing its citizens while still offering aid to other countries, a country demonstrates responsible leadership and moral awareness. This balance approach recognizes that taking care of your own people first is crucial, but helping other countries is part of building a safer future for everyone.
