Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

International aid - Standpoint image 3

Since the start of 2026, the UK government has significantly reduced aid from 0.5% to 0.3%. In my opinion, this is fair since we may need more money for our own country given the negative news around the world and threats of war. The BBC states that in the UK, spending on defence has gone up, which means that we obviously need it and should put the needs of our citizens first.

Even though cuts have happened, the UK will still be sending aid to help developing nations so I think it is fair for a country to put itself first as they are still helping around the world. Other people think that this choice is unfair since people should prioritize those who are poorer than us. Other countries put themselves first though so we should too.
