Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

International aid - Standpoint image 3

A country first responsibility should be to help its own citizen. The government is chosen by the people of that country so its main job is to protect and support them. Citizens pay taxes and follow the laws so they expect their government to provide things like healthcare, educations, jobs and safety. If a country spends too much money helping other countries while its own people are struggling, it could create unfair situations where citizens do not receive the support they need.

One reason why I view this way is responsibility. Governments are created to serve the people in their country first. For example, if many citizens are dealing with poverty, poor schools and unemployment , the government should focus on solving those problems before sending large amounts of aid abroad. Taking care of citizens help build a stronger economy and a more stable society.

Another reason is when a country becomes stronger and more developed, it will be able to help others more later. If the government invest in its own people by improving education and healthcare, the country will grow economically. A stronger country will then have more resources in the future to give international aid. Even though helping the world is important I beleive a country first responsibility should still be to help it own citizens.
