If all ages are influenced by misinformation, should there be any age limits on voting?

Misinformation affects everyone. Adults share fake news on social media, fall for conspiracy theories, and are influenced by perjudiced headlines. If susceptibility to misinformation were the standard for voting, many adults would also fail the test. Yet we do not question their right to vote. So why should age alone determine who is “informed enough”?
The main argument for keeping the voting age at 18 is maturity. Younger teenagers are still developing emotionally and mentally. Some argue they lack the life experience to make responsible political choices. However, maturity does not suddenly appear on someone’s 18th birthday. Many 16- and 17-year-olds work, pay taxes, follow the news, and study politics in school. In fact, they are often more recently educated about how government works than many older voters.
If we accept that misinformation is a universal problem, the solution should not be excluding certain age groups. Instead, we should invest in better civic education and media for everyone. Teaching students how to evaluate sources, identify webs, and question viral would fortify democracy maintain far more than simply elevating or lowering an age limit.
There is also a justice argument. Political decisions directly affect young people education policy, climate change, public transport, and job opportunities. If they are old enough to work and contribute to society, some argue they should have a voice in forming its future.
However, completely changing age limits would be absurd. Very young children clearly lack the capacity to understand political systems. An age limit is therefore practical, even if imperfect. The real debate is whether 18 is the most appropriate line, or whether 16 might better reflect modern levels of knowledge and responsibility.
In the end, misinformation is not an age problem, it is a social one. Instead of focusing only on how old voters are, we should focus on how well-informed they are, and how we can build a culture that values critical thinking across all generations.
