If all ages are influenced by misinformation, should there be any age limits on voting?

Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image 2

I think there should still be an age limit for voting, but it should be lowered to 16 because misinformation doesn't only affect young people but also adults.

The first example that supports my opinion is that adults are also influenced by misinformation, especially on social media. False information spreads quickly online, and people of all ages can believe it. If misinformation affects everyone, it would be unfair to stop 16-year-olds from voting for that reason. Age doesn't automatically make someone better at spotting false information.

The second example is that sixteen-year-olds already have important responsibilities. Sixteen-year-olds can work, pay taxes, and make decisions about their education. If they are trusted with these responsibilities, they also be trusted to vote. Also countries like Brazil have allowed voting at 16 for decades, which shows that young people can take part in democracy too.

So misinformation is a problem for every age, and the solution should be a better education and media literacy, not raising or keeping a strict age limit.

Someone who disagrees with me might argue that because misinformation is more common among young people, we should raise the voting age or keep it at 18 to protect democracy. They may say younger teens are more easily influenced.

If adults fall for fake news everyday, why are we blaming 16-year-olds for misinformation

Misionformation doesn't check your age before spreading, so democracy shouldn't silence young people because of it.
