Should voting rights match a person’s legal responsibilities?

Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image 4

I think voting rights shouldn’t be based on a person’s age, it should be based on a person’s legal responsibility and knowledge. Just because someone is young does not mean they are uninformed of the world around them. People could take a test to determine if they are qualified to vote.

People who are adults can still be legally unaware, and they could have no idea who to vote for. Should those people be the people in charge of choosing our political leaders? Adults sometimes don’t care to check the news and they scroll over political argument videos on their phones. Adults wouldn’t care about politicians unless it affected them directly.

Meanwhile, Teens/children are learning about laws and history in school, giving them some political knowledge about what things our leaders should be doing. Adults may have learned this stuff as well, but there is a high chance that they probably forgot about the things they learned. Young people should be able to use this knowledge while they still remember it.
