Can technology make sports more equal, or does it only widen the gap between competitors?

Technology can be useful in sports. It can help teams that aren’t doing well and it can be a replacement for sick referees. However, tech can make sports unequal.

One example was in 2025 when five Norwegian skiers and managers cheated with tech by adding an extra string to their ski suits. They got suspended and their coach admitted that they cheated. Because of their actions, this gave them an unfair advantage. This has proven that sometimes technology should be banned from certain sports.

In football, a piece of technology called VAR (Video Assistant Referee) is used in the Premier League. Since VAR was introduced, it has improved accuracy from 82% to 96%. It checks goals, giving red and yellow cards to the correct person and confirming penalties. Even without VAR, in 1986 Diego Maradona dribbled from his own half past five players to score which was voted goal of the century but was later agreed it should not have been allowed.

In 2005 Hawk eye, a special camera, was first introduced in tennis. It helps avoid human errors and it increases accuracy. Some people say that it is sad because it ruins the tradition of humans calling the ball but many agree it is right to rely on this tech because it has more accuracy.

The official debut of the HALO was in 2018. This device has helped and saved many lives. In particular, Romain Grosjean survived a 200 km/h impact that caused a fire. The HALO split the guardrail, creating a survival space for the driver to escape the fire.

In conclusion, my opinion about tech with sports is that in some circumstances they can be used like the HALO because it saves many lives. If it is used for cheating and unfairness like the Norwegian skiers, it isn’t necessary. If tech is to be used, there need to be rules in place to keep it fair for everyone.

Therefore, the real question isn’t just about technology, it’s about making sports fair for everyone to enjoy.
