Can technology make sports more equal, or does it only widen the gap between competitors?

I think that it depends how you use it because technology can be used in good ways but it can also be used in bad ways. Let's start off with football and how they used it.

VAR (video assistant referee) in football is one of many techs used and possibly the most responsible one; it slows down goals that referees aren’t able to visualise with the human eye. It makes the shot slower so that they can tell if it is a goal or not a goal. They also use it for whether players need to get sent off like when calling a red or yellow card and has improved accuracy.

In tennis hawk eye is a very well used computer vision system used to track the ball speed and determine whether the ball is “in” or “out”. Using a high-speed camera it makes a good 3D simulation view to check if the ball went over the lines. So when they get back the information they automatically shout out whatever they’ve heard. This piece of tech has also increased the accuracy in the game.

The halo was invented in F1 and introduced in 2018 because of the severe death of Bianchi after suffering bad head injuries in a race. Amazingly, this halo can take the mass of a double-decker bus and has saved lots of people (drivers) like Zhou Guanyu whose car flipped several times at a high speed of 200mph. Luckily the halo saved him from injury.

However, tech has been used illegally. In the 2025 Olympics some of the Norwegian ski team used crafted items to cheat the game and help themselves win. During the check inspection they found out that they hid the tech in their suits. The coach did announce that they were cheating and they were banned.

I also play sports myself and a tech I use is my apple watch which helps me to track my heartbeat and do some exercise before I play my matches. It also gives me a daily reminder to do some breathing exercises and sessions before I go to bed.

So my end opinion is that yes technology should be allowed to be used in sports but as soon as it’s used the wrong way and makes sport unequal, it should get straight banned from that sport.
