Can technology make sports more equal, or does it only widen the gap between competitors?

The Winter Games - Standpoint image 4

Tech has slowly, slowly been developing through time helping and changing the sport to make the game fairer and fun for spectators. So the real question is has tech improved performance fairly or has it only made the sports less enjoyable?

Is technology helping to close the gap between players, and making the game enjoyable for everyone, or is it only making the experience less enjoyable for people who have a strong passion for that sport?

[Halo in Formula One and Formula Two]

Halo has helped people survive dreadful crashes mostly leaving players with only minor injuries or completely uninjured. Many people consider formula one/two the most dangerous sport because of the speed of the formula car and the amount of people that faced death while doing this sport, for example in 2009 Henry Surtees tragically died while participating in the Formula two races. According to BBC bitesize Henry was about eighteen years old when he died, the cause of his death was that he had followed a ‘freak accident’. Because of this accident formula one/ two began taking driver safety more seriously.

[Hawk-eye]

Hawk-eye is a computer vision system in tennis that improves accuracy and avoids human error. Big tournaments (Australian and US Opens) have adopted this system.

Players have mostly supported the decision of having a new piece of tech to make sure that the game is fair and exciting.

[VAR]

VAR has improved accuracy from 82% to 96%. VAR is used in football to make sure that the following is done correctly:

1) checking that goals have been scored

2) making sure that red and yellow cards are given to the correct player

3) penalty/offside given fairly

4) securing that a player deserves a red card

Even though technology has helped many people to improve accuracy when trying to make sure that a player has scored a fair point, groups with a bigger budget have an unfair advantage because unlike the groups that have little but nothing of money they can afford more tech that can physically change the game, unfairly improve performance while others can’t and make new world records less impressive than those completed in the past that were done with only physical strength.
