Can technology make sports more equal, or does it only widen the gap between competitors?

One way technology improves equality in sports is by making judging more accurate. Tools, such as VAR, help referees review key moments in football matches, like goals or justifications for booking (red card). This reduces human errors and ensures that important decisions are based on a neutral party, which helps create a more level playing field.

However, technology can also give wealthier athletes and teams a major advantage. Some equipment is extremely expensive and only available to some competitors. For example, advanced running shoes like the Nike Vaporfly have been shown to improve running efficiency, helping athletes run faster times. Or the Nike Mules Mind, which helps athletes recover better. Athletes or teams who cannot afford this type of equipment are at a disadvantage compared to those who can access the latest technology.

Overall, technology can both improve fairness and increase inequality in sports. While tools that assist referees can make competitions more accurate and fair, expensive equipment can give certain athletes an advantage. Therefore, technology can help make sports more equal, but only if it is carefully regulated so that all athletes have an equal chance to win in their respective sports.
