Does the use of technology make new world records less impressive than those of the past?

The Winter Games - Standpoint image 3

Technology is something that is used all around the world , not just in sports, and technology is also being used a lot in this year’s Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games worldwide. Many people believe that technology is a big upgrade and will make the Games more exciting and accurate compared to all the years before. Still, plenty more people think that the overuse of technology in the Winter Games is disappointing and it will make records less impressive and not as shocking. I think that technology being used in the Winter and Paralympic Games is okay, but it depends on the level of technology they use so they don’t have a huge impact on or advantage against countries that don’t have as much money to buy as advanced technology.

The Winter Games doesn’t need technology to make the game fair. Sports in general also doesn’t really need that much technology to improve the gameplay either. It could be small things, for example, in football. In 2020,after a bit of a mix up, they introduced a piece of technology called VAR,which helps referees make independent choices and reduces the chance of inaccuracy. Another piece of evidence as to why I think this is in the Paralympic Games,if an athlete is disabled, they will be provided with a prosthetic blade, which will help them be at the same level as all the other athletes. For example,Markus Rehm used a prosthetic carbon fibre blade to help him out with his long jump. Technology is useful in sport, but sometimes it isn’t as friendly and more of a cheat.

Some people may think that technology is a bad thing, and that it shouldn’t be used in the Winter Games. For example, they might think that disabled athletes shouldn’t be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games, and that they should have never gotten into sport in the first place. Others might say that some countries aren’t as rich as other countries. The poor countries would have a disadvantage since the richer countries could afford more equipment to help their representatives and athletes win each event.

In conclusion, technology can be useful and is useful, but if you overuse it, it can easily rig matches and make it unfair for other countries competing in the Winter and Paralympic Games. I don’t think technology should be used a lot because it could ruin the sport.
