Does the use of technology make new world records less impressive than those of the past?

The Winter Games - Standpoint image 2

Ever Winter Games wie see new world records and amazing performances. At first glance it looks like athletes today are simply stronger and faster than athletes in the past. However, I think that many modern world records are less impressive because technology plays a very large role in these achievements.

One important reason is that new sports technology can directly change improve athletic performance. In many winter sports, the design of equipment affects how efficiently athletes move. A good example comes from speed skating. when the ''clap skate" was introduced in the late 1990s, the blade stayed on the ice longer and allowed skaters to push more powerfully. Shortly after the new skate appeared, several world records were broken in a single season. This shows that the improvement did not come only from stronger athletes but also from better technology helping them move faster.

Another reason is that technology can suddenly cause a large number of records to fall at the same time. This happened in swimming between 2008 and 2009 wen athletes used high-tech polyurethane swimsuits that rdeuced drag in the water. During that period more than 100 world records were broken. Because the suits had such a strong effect on the performance, they were later banned by the international swimming federation . This example suggests that equipment itself can play a big role in record breaking performances.

A third reason is that technological progress makes comparisons between different generations of athletes difficult. Athletes today benefit from advanced materials, aerodynamic clothing, improved ice preparation and modern sports science. These improvements help athletes train more efficiently and perform under better conditions. As a result, a modern wolrd record does not always mean that today's athletes are physically superior to those in the past. In many cases, it many reflect the advantages provided by better technology and training methods.

Some people argue that technology is simply part of progress in sport. They believe that athletes still need great talent, discipline and years of training to achieve world records. While this is true, in my opinion the influence of modern equipment cannot be ignored.

For these reasons, i believe that technology has changed the emailing of many world records. They are still impressive achievements but are often a result of both human performance and the technological development.
