How to identify trustworthy news

A supporting resource for your classroom

Published 01 June 2020

There are certain things to look out for and consider when deciding if the news we get is trustworthy. This is an adapted version of the eight Trust Indicators from The Trust Project. Not all of these will be relevant all the time, but the indicators give a good basis for how to question the news presented to us.

How to use this resource with your students:

  • When a news story is circulating or rumours are spreading - refer students to these indicators so they can make their own minds up
  • Familiarise students with the questions so that it becomes a habit for them to ask themselves them when they read or watch the news
  • When you introduce a new source, get students to verify it by using this list
