Ideas to make Topical Talk inclusive for all learners

Topical Talk resources are written with a broad range of students in mind. We try to include activities for students aged 10-16 and our team of teachers have diverse classroom experience. That doesn't mean our resources will be right for every student, every time. These suggestions in this pack came from a research project in special educational needs schools but have tips for how to make conversations more inclusive for all learners.

How to use this resource with your students:

  • Idea one: visualise it - use these suggestions when topics are particularly sensitive or might provoke strong, opposing opinions
  • Idea two: share it - these ideas can help build understanding of a news story, before launching into whole-class discussion or debate
  • Idea three: communicate it - if students who need support to enter a larger group discussion, these ideas might help
