Question cards

A supporting resource for your classroom

Published 01 June 2020

Good questioning is an essential part of Topical Talk. It helps student to justify their points, reflect, think critically and change their minds. It can be difficult to think of the "right" question to ask when you're in the moment, so these cards help both you, and your students, become familiar with a host of versatile questions that develop discussions.

How to use this resource with your students:

  • Pick one set of cards to focus on. Ask the questions throughout a lesson or after a discussion activity.
  • Give the cards to students. Get them to pick relevant questions to ask each other, then report back on the developed thinking they heard.
  • Make a display of the question cards. Get students into the habit of going to the display to pick/answer questions when their discussion or ideas have dried up.
