From small achievements to great revolutions

Written standpoint on women in space

Throughout the years, women have been struggling to gain opportunities and rights in all areas of life. Every small achievement ,from the right to vote to the participation in science, politics and space, represents a giant leap for them. When one woman breaks these barriers inspires others to do the same, this causes a great revolution that transforms the world.

One of these areas of life in which women have overcome stereotypes is in astronomy. Until the Soviet Valentina Tereshkova became the first cosmonaut in history it was unthinkable that a girl could dream of being an astronaut. This is because in 1960 NASA prevented any woman from applying for the selection of candidates because in order to be admitted they had to pass the tests for fighter pilots, which a woman could not take because it was considered too dangerous. Which was a very unfair situation.

Without doubt, women have not had it easy in the aerospace industry, where only 10% of the total are women. At the beggining of being allowed to be part of team they had to support questions such as where they were going to do their makeup there or brush their hair, these are comments that are not necessary and are due to certain sterotypes. But despite all these obstacles, the women´s space carreer is already unstoppable.

The last mission so far will take place this spring of 2025, where six women from various fields will embark on Blue Origin´s NS-31 mission, marking a great achievement in space exploration. Among them there are scientists, artists, businesswomen and communicators. These are host Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, activist Amanda Nguyen, producer Kerianne Flynn, host Lauren Sanchez and well-known singer Katty Perry. Does not it sound incredible?

I´m sure that this mission will be very known and that this can be a trip that inspires future generations to continue doing missions and researching about the space. Moreover, this is an example that it is never too late to chase your dreams and be able to achieve them.

From my point view, despite all the obstacles that women have had overcome, they have achieved great things for the aeronautical industry, overcoming stereotypes and chasing their dreams. In addition, more and more women are interested in astronomy which is very good because the more people study and are interested in this the more progress will be and therefore new achivements and missions will take place.
