The Impact of Stereotypes on Society

Written standpoint on women in space

Gender inequality and stereotypes:

Gender inequality is a pretty bad problem in our society and it all started a few hundred years ago (18th to 19th century) when women started to be seen as more "inferior" than men. Back then, women's rights were very limited and everything was really strict, it was hard to go to school, get a job or even have some respect from men.

Since everything started a long time ago, this idea had a lot of time to set into people's minds, get rooted into out society and also travel through generations of people. That created stereotypes. From my point of view, stereotypes are one of the biggest problems in our society since they kind of shape the way men see women, the more spread a stereotype is, the more believed it will be.

Stereotypes have a huge impact on women's careers for example: the gender pay gap. It varies a lot from country to country, the biggest gender pay gap is in South Korea with about 31% gap between men and women, then it's followed by Israel and Latvia with almost 25%. Then we have the countries with the smallest gender pay gaps which are: Luxembourg, Italy, Romania and Belgium who have less than 5% difference between men's and women's salaries (statistics from euronews.com)

Female astronauts also have a big impact on the gender inequality topic since if they are seen as 'weaker' than men, they sometimes have to do even more work than men to be hired for the same job and many times they will even have smaller salaries in the same industry. I also did some research about women in the space industry and found out that women represent only about 30% of the public space sector organization (information from space4women.unoosa.org).

Last but not least, I also want to clarify that women should not be superior to men, no gender should be 'superior'. According to the United Nations Population Funds (UNFPA) "Gender inequality holds back the growth of individuals, the development of countries and the evolution of societies, to the disadvantage of both men and women.".
