Does giving international aid sometimes cause more harm than good?
In early 2025, the US government announced changes to how it would give international aid. Within a few months, funding was paused or reviewed, and by July 2025 the US Agency for International Development (USAID) was officially closed.
This made people ask whether international aid sometimes causes more harm than good, or if it mostly helps countries that need support.
Some people believe richer countries have a responsibility to help poorer countries. In the past, many wealthy countries became rich by taking resources from other countries during colonial times. Even today, some poorer countries still provide valuable resources like oil or minerals but remain stuck in poverty.
Because of this history, some people think wealthier countries should help support development and reduce poverty by giving aid.
However, international aid does not always work as planned. Sometimes aid can be misused, stolen, or fall into the hands of criminal groups instead of reaching the people who need it most. When this happens, aid can cause problems instead of helping.
There is also debate about whether governments should spend money helping other countries when there are still problems within their own country.
In conclusion, international aid can sometimes cause harm if it is not used properly. However, I still think it can do a lot of good when it is managed carefully and reaches the people who really need help.
