Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

International aid - Standpoint image 5

Countries that give international aid should first be responsible and prioritize their own citizens. Of course, if the wealthier nations have more resources to give to developing countries, they could reduce poverty, improve the quality of life, lessen the effects of natural disasters, and support development or recovery in countries that need assistance. But alas, what does the importance signify if your own country is struggling behind closed curtains?

I believe that no country is perfect, free from poverty, free from corruption, and that every country has its own struggles and challenges to manage. That’s why a country's first responsibility is to help its own citizens, to accomplish leaders' oaths, to fulfill the duty of the country.

An example shown from nature is mother birds and their love for their chicks. A mother bird feeds her chicks, keeps them warm, and protects them from predators. If danger comes, a mother bird will focus on prioritizing her own chicks first, not the other surrounding birds in the area. This shows how we instinctively, as living beings, protect and care for our closest and dearest connections first, rather than other neighbours.

In spite of my own beliefs for this debate between a country helping its own citizens or helping other people in need around the world, we have to take note of the differences in the situations. A huge number of nations in the world are struggling and in need of aid from resources that they can't provide; that's where more stable and richer countries can step in and help them. At the end, this shouldn't be a debate about what to choose between domestic vs international, but on how a leading country can balance the needs of their country while also tending to care and contributing to global welfare.

In conclusion, a country’s first and utmost responsibility is to its own citizens, and once their needs are met, extending support to others is not only possible but also admirable. By balancing a country's own needs and global requirements, countries can make a meaningful difference both at home and abroad.
