Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

“Charity begins at home.” This well-known saying can also be applied to politics. In my opinion, governments have a responsibility to take care of their own citizens before spending money on helping other countries.
One reason for this is that people have the right to expect their government to take care of them with the money they pay in the form of taxes. If this money is used for projects outside the country’s borders, many citizens may consider this unfair. Therefore, the government has a moral responsibility toward its own people.
In addition, a government is based on the solidarity and trust of its citizens. If the government does not care enough about their needs, this can lead to dissatisfaction and political instability. People may start protesting and lose trust in their leaders. As a result, extreme political parties may gain support, which is unfortunately also a concern here in Germany right now.
Moreover, spending too much money on foreign aid could potentially lead to financial or economic problems. Every state has limited financial resources that must be managed carefully and responsibly. For example, if a government spends large amounts on foreign aid while schools are underfunded or infrastructure projects remain incomplete, this could hinder the education system and therefore slow down economic growth.
Some people might argue that helping other countries first could indirectly benefit one’s own country. For example, it might create economic opportunities or help reduce global problems such as migration, because fewer people would be forced to leave their home countries.
However, I believe that this argument is not convincing. The impact of foreign aid is often not strong enough to solve such complex global problems, while the same resources could be used far more effectively within the country itself.
For these reasons, I believe that helping its own citizens should be the main priority of any government. Governments owe it to their people to improve infrastructure, education, and public services. Focusing too much on external aid could otherwise lead to political dissatisfaction and even financial difficulties.
