Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

International aid - Standpoint image

This statement doesn't really have a pure black or white answer. My answer for this question is it depends on the situation the country faces. A country could choose to prioritize it's own citizens before helping others. Or they could take action in providing aid for countries thats facing urgent issue, like natural disasters, war, etc. A country with a good economy could even do both.

A example of this is the "America First Policy Directive to the Secretery of State". A policy that puts America and it's interests first. Can america chose to prioritise their nation first while still continuing to help others?, maybe. They have the strongest economy in this world. "They could probably choose to help if they want to. But in the end they choose not to". The Administration has rescinded billions of dollars in foreign aid that was previosly approved by congress. In july they rescinded around US$7.9 billion dollars for aid funding, and in August they unilaterally rescinded it to around US$4.9 billion dolars. because the Administrations efforts to return funding from wasteful foreign assistance programs to the American Taxpayers.

"They could have chosen both of them, and they have chosen not to". Like the example above, cutting foreign aid doesn't really have a disernable impact on how America helps their needy people. At the end it all depends on the situation. Things like the country's wealth and economy is a playing factor to decide. It all depends whether we have the will to asess both situation. The government could have a mindset of “We shouldn’t help those people until we’ve helped all of our people.” Or they could even think its impossible to help every single citizens, so they start to prioritize helping others.

At the end the only solution i think could help is if they actually devote time and effort into doing something about the problem rather than deciding which one to choose.

Thanks for reading my standpoint, feel free to correct me if i made a mistake.
