Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

The war in Ukraine shows how countries have to decide whether they should help their own citizens or people in other parts of the world. Many governments have sent money, weapons and humanitarian aid to support Ukraine. At the same time, some citizens ask if this money should be used to solve problems at home instead. This raises an important question:Should a countrys first responsibility be to help its own people or those in need around the world?
Although helping other countries is important, I believe that a governments first responsibility should be to its own citizens.
First, a government has responsibility to its people. Leaders are elected by the citizens of their country, not by people around the world. Citizens pay taxes and vote in elections, so they expect their government to improve their lives. During election speeches, politicians promise better schools, safer streets and stronger healthcare systems. If a government focuses too much on international problems while ignoring these promises, people may lose trust in their leaders and in democracy.
Second, a government must protect the safety and stability of its country. In times of crisis, security in its own country is especially important. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic many countries first focused on protecting their own population. Governments provided financial support and medical equipment for their citizens. This shows that protecting their citizens is the most important task of a government.
Third, a strong county can help others more effective. Countries with stable economies and good social systems are able to give better humanitarian aid to other nations. However, if a country has high unemployment, poverty or economic problems, it will not have enough resources to help others. Helping citizens first makes the country stronger and a strong country can support people around the world in a better way.
However, some people argue that governments should focus more on global problems like climate war or hunger because these problems affect everyone. They believe helping other countries creates a fairer and safer world. While this argument is relateable , a government cannot ignore the needs of its own citizens.
In conclusion, a countrys first responsibility should be to its own people because of democratic responsibility, safety and stability. Once these needs are ensured, countries can also help people in need around the world.
