Should a country’s first responsibility be to help its own citizens or to help people in need around the world?

I agree that a country’s first responsibility is to help its own citizens. We see suffering in other countries and want to help. But if you ask me, a country’s first and most important job is to take care of its own people. That's not selfishness-it's just basic common sense.
Think about it like this. If you see a neighbour’s house on fire, you don’t start worrying about a flood on the other side of town first. You make sure your family is safe, your own home isn’t burning down, and then you help others. A government works the same way. How can we justify sending billions in aid overseas when a country still has some problems at home? It feels backwards. The taxes we pay should first fix our own crumbling roads, fund our schools properly, and make sure our elderly don’t have to choose between medicine and food.
This isn’t about building walls or hating other countries. Not at all. It's about being competent at home first. A country that can’t take care of its own citizens is weak. It loses the trust of its people. And honestly, how can we truly help others if we’re falling apart ourselves?
When we put our own citizens first, we build a strong, stable nation. And strong nations are in best position to be generous and help others effectively when it really counts. Charity begins at own country for a reason. It’s about priorities, not isolation.
