Who should have the most say in how aid is used: the countries giving the aid or the communities receiving it?

International aid - Standpoint image 4

International aid is most effective when it listens before it acts. The donor countries may be the source of the aid, but the people receiving the aid know the problems, cultures, and needs of the areas better than anybody else. As such, the people in those areas should have the greatest say in the usage of the aid that is provided to them.

International aid is often created far away in an office by individuals who have not experienced the reality of the areas that the aid is attempting to assist. This can lead to the aid not really helping the problems that it is supposed to solve, such as when the aid is spent on fancy infrastructure projects, when the real needs of the people in the areas could be schools, water systems, or farming assistance.

As a result, the effectiveness of the aid will increase, and it will be more sustainable. This way, the people will have a sense of ownership, and the chances of success and sustainability will be higher even after the aid has been withdrawn. In many successful aid programs, community planning has led to successful educational, healthcare, and economic initiatives in the host countries.

However, the role of the donor countries still remains crucial in the success of the international aid. This is because they have the resources, and it is their responsibility to ensure transparency and accountability in the usage of the resources.

The best way to have international aid is through partnership. The donor countries have the resources, technology, and expertise, and the host countries have their own understanding of their situations. This way, international aid will not just be charity, but rather a partnership.

In conclusion, I believe that international aid could not be done to the host countries, but rather done with them. This way, international will not just be charity, but rather a way to help them come out of their situations. This way, international aid will be more than just charity, and the host countries will have a louder voice.
