If all ages are influenced by misinformation, should there be any age limits on voting?

Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image 4

It’s true that people of every age can be influenced by misinformation. Younger voters see it on social media, but older voters are not immune either. That does not automatically mean age limits should disappear, though. The purpose of age thresholds is not to guarantee perfect judgment. It is to ensure a basic level of maturity, legal responsibility, and cognitive development before someone helps choose a government.

At the same time, it is worth acknowledging that age does not reliably predict how well someone separates fact from fiction. There are well‑informed teenagers and poorly informed adults, and vice versa. So using misinformation alone as the argument for raising or lowering the voting age does not really settle anything.

A more practical way to think about it is this: misinformation is a problem for the entire electorate, not a specific age group. If everyone is vulnerable, then solutions should focus on improving media literacy, strengthening fact‑checking, and increasing public trust in reliable information rather than deciding who gets to vote at all.

Lowering the voting age could bring benefits too. Young people are affected by long‑term policies on climate, education, and public finances, and giving them a vote encourages earlier civic engagement. Several countries that let 16‑ or 17‑year‑olds vote have not seen major problems. But it still requires proper education so that first‑time voters, whatever their age, feel equipped to make choices.

Keeping the voting age where it is has its own logic. Legislatures tend to pick ages that line up with other legal responsibilities. Voting then fits into the broader idea of adulthood rather than being treated as a special case.

Overall, if misinformation affects everyone, the better question is not whether age limits should change but how to help voters of all ages make informed decisions. Age limits might still exist for practical reasons, yet the real challenge lies in strengthening the information environment, not narrowing the electorate.
