If all ages are influenced by misinformation, should there be any age limits on voting?

Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image 4

I agree that there should be age limits for the voting age; however we should set our sights on a maximum voting age rather than a minimum voting age. Others might argue that the older generation still deserves to have their voices heard as they would be more informed of politics over a much longer period and understand of the effects of voting, but I don't believe that's simply enough.

In modern times, the older generations still dominate when it comes to voting according to Our World in Data-- where, on average about 67% of people ranged from ages 18-34 voted, whereas an average of almost 80% of people over the age of 60 voted. I feel this is important as we need to focus on factors such as family and tradition, media and news, and personal experiences.

While all ages are exposed to misinformation, that's only one factor in the decisions made to the polls. South Africa has a fifth of registered voters over 50 years old. One particular party has remained in presidential elections since 1994 because of Apartheid, and the fact it was that party that allowed freedom and democracy. The people and families who experienced it still feel the effects to this day and even after times of corruption and incompetence are still voted for because the other factors are weighed down by them.

The average age of a country is very different from the average voting age, yet policies and regulations usually apply to the younger generations. This feels unfair because the result of an unaffected generation's decision in turn affects the generation who may have voted differently and have to live with such consequences.

Overall, I believe that the maximum age should be considered for debate as their effect on the modern society are dwindling. I would personally restrict it to 70 years old as by then, most that age have retired by then and existing laws will be there for social grants and pensions.
