Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image 1

In my opinion, the issue of voting rights in relation to the extent of one's responsibilities under the law is an issue of concern in modern democracies. Some people believe that the voting age should be lowered , considering that the youth of today are informed about the issues that affect the country. On the other hand, some people believe that voting should remain the exclusive right of who have the full responsibilities under the law.

First, the voting age for teenagers should be lowered. Most teenagers today have knowledge of the issues that affect the country, including social, environmental and economic issues. Moreover, teenagers are also affected by the government's policies regarding education, climate change and employment opportunities. Therefore, voting can motivate young people to take their responsibilities towards the country seriously.

But legal rights and responsibilities are normally conferred at adulthood for a reason. There is an age at which people are deemed mature enough to make decisions such as entering into legal contracts, participating in jury service, or taking full responsibility for their actions. Voting is a decision that will shape the course of a nation, and it is not an easy decision to make. It calls for maturity, critical thinking, and an understanding of complex issues. In this regard, it is logical to argue that voting rights should correlate with the age at which people are legally recognized as adults.

Rather than granting voting rights to minors, it is more logical to advocate for the enhancement of political education among young people before they reach the age at which they are entitled to vote. This way, the youth will be well prepared to vote when the time comes.

In conclusion, while the views of the youth are valuable, voting rights should correlate with legal responsibilities to ensure that voters are mature enough to make informed decisions that will shape the course of our collective future.
