Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image

I think lowering the voting age would improve democracy. Democracy is about represantation, and giving 16 years olds the right to vote would increase inclusivity and fairness in the system. Young people are directly affected by laws regarding education, climate change, public transportation, and even online safety. they deserve a say in deciding leader and influencing laws that affect them.

Somw people may argue that 16 years olds are too immature and are easily influenced. They believe that lowering the voting age would force political parties to change their campaign strategies to be appealing for teenagers. While campaigns may focus more on issues regarding the younger generation, this is not necessarily a negative thing. It would encourage politicians to pay more attention to and address concerns of younger citizens like mental health problems and online policies, which are often overlooked.

In Austria, Brazil, and several other countries, where 16 years olds are allowed to vote in certain elections, studies have shown that they are capable or voting responsibly. Research often suggests that they prepare carefully before voting, and even show similar levels of political understanding as older voters. This proves that age alone does not determine political maturity. Therefore, excluding 16 years olds olds from voting solely because of age may not be justified.

Lowering the voting age would strengthen democracy by making it more representative of all ages and encouraging long term engagement with citizens. Campaigns adapt and change to reflect a more inclusive and forward-thinking political system. As the future workers, citizens, and leaders of the country, young people deserve a say in shaping the society they are to inherit, not just its consequences.
