Lowering the voting age - Standpoint image 3

Yes, it will improve democracy and here's why

Many countries and regions that have made it legal for 16-year-olds to vote have proven to advance in their politics. Some examples are Austria, Brazil, and Argentina.

Austria's law regarding voting in the elections had changes in 2007 and soon in 2013 AUNTES (The Austrian National Election Study) examined the effects of lowering the voting age in its project 'Voting at 16 in the 2013 National Council Election'. The results of this project showed increase in early political engagement as well as strengthening long-term democratic participation. Other than that, it should that the turnout rates were relatively high for the youth specifically 16 and 17-year-olds; this experience could help them build a long-term habit for participation.

In Brazil's case it started as early as 1988, the system permitted 16 and 17 year olds to vote but unlike ages from 18-70 it wasn't a compulsory. Since then many youth started to vote and participate in political discussions. Recently in 2022 datas showed an increasing number of turnouts in the age rage of 16 and 17 surpassing those who are in the retirement rage. This proves that young people are willing to engange in such activities when given the chance.

Argentina started a bit late compared to the others in 2012 and similarly to Brazil it is optional for 16 and 17-year-olds to vote. Unlike the previous 2 countries datas from the election show that turnouts among 16 and 17-year-olds is slightly lower than the older age groups. Even with a smaller percentage participation amongst the youth turnouts remain meaningful and is able to encourage political awareness.

From these 3 countries we can include that lowering the requirement for voting can bring positive impacts when handled properly. Increasing political awareness at such a young age would help us create a better world for future generations to come.
