Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tension?

NATO - Standpoint image 2

From this standpoint, I will discuss whether international alliances would make the world safer or even increase tensions.

Firstly, some people would say it would make the world safer because it would make their country safer. An example of this is the US and the UK. Despite recent concerns, they're still strong allies and reliant. Imagine the UK without the USA. Personally, the UK wouldn't be able to survive without the country, as if it eventually happens, the economy would crumble, and the UK's defence wouldn't be as strong to rival other countries and protect the country, should WW3 happen. Someone who has this side on this is precious_cicada, who says, "Alliances are created to protect countries and make them feel safer in a dangerous world. When nations join together in alliances like NATO, they promise to support and defend each other. This unity makes them stronger and can prevent wars, because other countries may not want to challenge a powerful group. Alliances can also build trust and cooperation between member countries, helping them work together to solve problems."

On the other hand, some people would say that it wouldn't and would create more tension. An example of this is the Ukraine war against Russia, where the UK, which was a former ally of Russia, started donating aid to Ukraine, making the country one of the newest threats. A person who went for this side of the conversation is conscientious_meaning, who said "While they do make the world a bit safer due to the threat of attacking member states, they also create new threats by dividing the world into countries always ready for war as well escalate small local conflicts into global ones."

Overall, I think (Like most comments) I'm quite neutral on this. As much as alliances can strengthen a country's safety, it could lead to countries divided, therefore starting wars with each other.
