Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tension?

I believe that international alliances, such as NATO or the UN, are essential for global stability because they allow countries to have the same incentives which prevents small conflicts from turning into large-scale wars. From a political perspective when we have alliances, countries are deterred from attacking over a small conflict as the cost of going to war with many countries is higher than one. A current example is NATO’s focus on the Indo-Pacific partners. In 2026, by building ties with countries like Japan and Australia, this alliance created a massive diplomatic wall that discouraged regional powers from starting a conflict. They were forced to think more about downstream effects and be careful not to cause chaos. Due to the cost of war being higher more solutions were explored. Now it is easier to go into negotiations than to bully small countries that may not have the best military. Therefore alliances are able to protect small nations. The nations who receive help would be thankful and will allow the reputations of countries to be better. Then countries have an incentive to keep up this reputation and not start wars.
From an economic perspective, when countries have factories and trade relationships with each other they won’t want to cause harm as that would hurt them as well. We can see this in the "European Chips Act" of 2026, where EU countries are investing €43 billion together into semiconductor factories. Because these nations now rely on each other for the microchips that run their cars and phones, a war between them would essentially destroy their own technology industries. Instead of everyone trying to improve themselves the world works together and everyone can benefit off the strengths and help improve the weakness. While some argue that alliances can trap countries into distant wars, like the 2026 debates over whether the US should stay committed to European security, I believe the economic and safety benefits far outweigh these risks. This is because if a country is willing to fight for something that is so huge that they can sacrifice their economy and all the people that may die it must be worth it. In conclusion countries will act more rational when they are safe and have a support system.
