Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tension?

An international alliance is an agreement established between several countries that share common interests in certain objectives, such as defense against threats, trade relations, or the fight against climate change. An example around us is NATO, signed by countries in Europe and North America after World War II, with the aim of promoting cooperation in defense.
When an alliance is created with a goal of defense and security, it has a fundamental characteristic: it is signed by different countries belonging to the same region, since, even with their differences, they may have similar economic and political interests, as well as common risks from other countries. Through these agreements, countries can organize their armies and increase collective security. I believe that the development of these alliances has helped provide stability among countries in a region that previously experienced conflicts. A clear example is Europe, where wars between countries have occurred frequently throughout history, and today, thanks to NATO and the European Union, we enjoy a period of peace among these countries.
However, if we evaluate these alliances on a global scale, we can see that they have not prevented tensions in the world, rather, they have sometimes extended conflicts between countries to the large blocs formed by different alliances. For example, when two large blocs of countries support opposing countries in a conflict, the risk increases and can affect other countries that are not directly involved. I understand that we may feel more protected by being part of an alliance with neighboring countries, and that some people may think that, by being part of these agreements, they are not at risk of experiencing a war.
In conclusion, alliances between countries come about during times of tension to look for stability in different regions, but this does not prevent the development of conflicts that, due to these alliances, could even become large-scale. However, I believe they are necessary, since, even though they do not eliminate conflicts, they help reduce the consequences of tension between different countries.
