Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tension?

International alliances are agreements between countries that promise to support each other, espefinally in times of conflict. One of the most important alliances today is NATO. It was founded in 1949 after WWII to protect members states and maintain peace. While alliances like NATO can increase security, they can also create political tensions with other countries.
On the one hand, alliances can make the world safer because they discourage attacks. NATO works on the principle of collective defense. This means that if one member country is attacked, the others will help defend it. This is written in Article 5. Because NATO includes powerful countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom or Germany, enemies will think twice before attacking a member country. In this way, the alliance acts as a strong shield and helps maintain stability.
Recent events show how NATO can help protect countries. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, NATO members increased their cooperation and support for Ukraine. Many NATO countries sent military equipment, financial aid and training for Ukrainian soldiers. Even though Ukraine is not a NATO member, the alliance has played an important role in helping it defend itself. This cooperation shows how alliances can strengthen countries that are threatened.
Another important event was the expansion of NATO includes 2024. Sweden joined the alliance. It had been neutral for many years, but the war in Ukraine increased security concerns in Europe. By joining NATO, SWeden now gets protection from all member states. At the same time, Sweden contributes to NATO's defense with its own military forces and technology.
However, international alliances can also increase tensions between countries. Nations outside the alliance may feel threatened by its military power and expansion. Russia has strongly criticized NATO's enlargement toward its border. Putin argues that NATO's expansion increases insecurity for their country. These disagreements have contributed to conflicts and political tensions between Russia and other Western countries.
In my opinion, international alliances like NATO can both increase safety and create tension. They help countries cooperate and defend each other, which can prevent attacks. At the same time, alliances may cause fear or rivalry among countries outside the group. Therefore, alliances play a complex role in global security and can make the world both safer and more divided.
