Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tension?

"Peace, commerce and honest friendship with all nations; entangling alliances with none.” Thomas Jefferson stated. Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tensions?I think alliances lead to more tensions most of the time. I feel this way because of the recent U.S.-Greenland (two NATO countries) disagreement, causing tension and could start war, with NATO questioning the alliance with the U.S. Also, both World Wars were caused by alliances that wanted to protect each other. For example, assasination of Archduke, Franz Ferdinand, and the invasion of Poland. Alliances force other countries to join a war they might not be ready for or a war they might not want to join. People who disagree with me likely think that alliances help protect civilians and countries, however, this is far from the truth. Neighboring countries, in Europe, could be hit accidentally, and their country could become a battlefield. Also, like stated above, the most important wars were caused by alliances. Alliances are only increasing the risk of World War 3. Therefore, even the strongest of alliances, like NATO, only causes more tension and war possibility.
