Whether to be protected by one single power or make various alliances is a choice that can determine the survival of a small country.

In my view, in most cases it is more important to be part of an alliance of many countries than to have just one strong relationship.

First of all, if you are in an alliance with one country, you can never fully trust that they won't betray you. For instance, the US has been a trusted member of NATO but lately the threats to annex Greenland mean that the other members of NATO have to reconsider whether they still trust this one great power or not.

Another point would be that in times of crisis a country is likely to receive greater amounts of support from multiple allies than one friendship. If we as a country are economically and militarily poorer than most other countries, the amount of support needed would be better met by multiple countries and one relationship might not be enough. If we take a stronger country like the US, in most cases it won't need help, however if it does need help one time and their ally is a weaker country, it won't be a strong enough alliance to reduce the damage done to that country. For example, when NATO supported America in the Afghan war, Europe lost as many troops as America, but if Europe was just one country it would have been a lot worse.

I understand why some might think that having a strong relationship is better since the two countries would fight together in case of war, however I disagree that it would be a strong alliance because if one country is defeated, the other one could have the same fate. And also, if one of the two countries decided to join a strong alliance like NATO, the other one might not because it might not agree with the rules.

In conclusion, I believe that having a strong relationship with one country can allienate other countries who could have potentially joined an alliance with you.
