Can technology make sports more equal, or does it widen the gap between competitors?

Technology plays a big role in sports today. It can help referees make better decisions and make sport safer for athletes by helping prevent serious injuries. It can also make sport more enjoyable to watch.

However, technology can also create unfair advantages, especially for richer teams and countries that can afford better equipment and training.

Norway ski suit scandal

In August 2025, two stars from the Norwegian ski team and three staff members were charged with cheating after illegally modifying their ski suits by adding reinforced threads. This gave them an unfair advantage during competitions.

Budgets

Team budgets in the Winter Olympics can create big differences between athletes. Countries with larger budgets, such as Norway, the USA and the UK, can afford better technology, specialised coaching and year-round training.

Meanwhile, athletes from poorer countries may struggle with travel costs, equipment and safety gear, and sometimes have to rely on self-funding.

Because of this, technology can sometimes widen the gap between competitors.

In conclusion, technology can be good for sport, but only if everyone has fair access to it.
