Does the use of technology make new world records less impressive than those of the past?

I totally think so, and I´m going to try to explain why.

Technology has made it easier for athletes and competitors to achieve new world records, which can make those records feel less impressive than those set in the past. In earlier times, athletes relied mostly on their natural ability, determination, and basic equipment. Today, however, advanced technology plays a major role in improving training, materials and even resting (there are some machines that are specialized to relax the muscles). Also, now athletes also have detailed data analysis, used for and specialized training methods.

For example, modern sports equipment is often designed using advanced materials and engineering to maximize speed, efficiency, or power. In some sports, even small technological improvements, such as lighter shoes, more aerodynamic or breathable clothing, or improved surface; can significantly affect performance. Because of this, when a new record is broken, it may reflect not only the athlete’s ability but also the technology supporting them.

Some very good examples are that in the olympic games of Los Ángeles 1984, only there were 11 new world records, while in London 2012, 32 world records were broken. Or also for example, the world record of 100m of swimming was 55.4 seconds in 1944 and now is 46 seconds. Although its only 9 seconds, in the olympic games, that difference is impressive.

Technology also allows athletes to train in ways that were impossible in the past. With video analysis, and scientific coaching methods, athletes can identify weaknesses and optimize every part of their training. While this helps them reach higher levels, it also means they are not competing under the same conditions as earlier record holders.

For these reasons, I believe that modern world records are less impressive than those from the past. Earlier athletes often achieved incredible results with fewer resources and less advanced equipment. Their accomplishments depended more heavily on raw talent and perseverance, which can make their records feel more remarkable when compared to the technology-assisted achievements of today.
